Top bearing on 2.5 powerhead

anyone have experience of changing the top bearing under flywheel on a merc v6? easy job? i have been informed that it might possibly be easily changed without a full stripdown??

hey Gav its Neil from Poole.

Its not too bad a job but you do have loosen off the crankcase to be able to pull the top bearing carrier out. Ideally this means removing the powerhead to be able to do this. If you are having to go that far you may as well check your bearings by pulling the crankcase off.

If you need a hand let me know

Cheers mate

Hi Neil, good to see you on boatmad mate!

We ( me n' Jono ) are going to have a go at it this weekend, if it all goes tits-up i'll be paying you a visit!

BTW, how much play should there be (if any) in the top bearing, ie, when i hold the flywheel and wiggle it side to side?

cheers Neil

Gav, just in case you find the top bearing journal fecked and you're in for a new crank, it is possible to machine out the carrier to take 2 narrow ball races which have an inside diameter which is a fit for the crank journal. Been there, done it. It works fine.

It sounds like someone mighta been "racing" a motor with standard flywheel on?

Reckon it'd be easier for him to source a replacement used crank if the crank journal is fecked..

If you have a late model 2.5 with a pressed on bearing it CANNOT be changed without a tear down. If you have the type 2.5 that has the bearing and the top cap inclusive it can be removed by loosening the crank case bolts but as quick as I can tear down an engine ( 37 minutes ) to the crankshaft when on a stand and several hours I can have it back together and that way the job is done correctly and I'm not wondering if something came loose when the cases were cracked open....

My opinion is if you have time to do it over the second time you had time to do it right the first time... These things are WAY to expensive to try things the "easy" way cause most of the time the"easy" way ends up biting you in the shorts...

Good luck,
Jay @ JSRE
