Dont know how much torque they make but you've got to rev them hard to make max power, mine is still accelerating at 8k.

A 260 merc wil pull 243 nm torque at 7500 rpm, thats easy because you can use a formula for that, you need rpm and BHP to calculate torque.
I don,t know whats max torque is ,as I need rpm and horsepower.
But max torque will be around 300 nm.
Dunno what you normally use in the U.K?,but to convert to ft/lbs
you have to divide those NM through 1,35
243 :1,35 or 300 : 1,35 = ft /lbs

Torque, not to happy with torque, it set me off moaning about the P1 rules, anyway I belive if you say your engine rev's somewhare between 7.5 - 8k, then according to my calculator a 260 hp 2.5 should produce around 175-185 lbs/ft hope this is of intrest

Burty if we say for instance your engine is bog standard Merc and it revs to 7500rpm then it will produce 182 lbs/ft if it goes on to rev to 8000rpm but produces no more hp ie the hp curve is flat till 8000rpm then torque will drop therefore peak torque will be lower in the rev range

Yeah, but the torque curve on a 260 is quite flat and i think peaks around 5500 rpm but just wanted to know for sure

Thats just telling you what the torque is at max revs or max power, if you want to figure out the peak torque you need a power plot against revs for the whole rev range.

I remember an old B&W magazine with max torque curves,a 200 EFI 2,5 merc was pulling 229 ft /lbs at 3800 rpm
a 260 merc is a much higer revving engine and should have less than that, but to be sure you have to look at some dyno numbers
maybe you could find a dyno sheet from land and sea?
These engines don,t pull big torque numbers ,but they have a very long powerband and therefore it could make hi horsepower .

Hi Burty, I must point out I am not an engine builder, have a mate who worked for years with a formula 3000 team and his mate works for Mcclaren and therefore I used to discuse these things with them, going back to your Merc the problem with giving a Torque figure is without testing the engine to find out how much hp it makes at different rpm, it can only be stated its torque at the 7500 rpm range although it may produce more torque lower in the rev range, so I guess no one on other forums can hazard a guess

Reading between the lines if the 200efi produced peak torque at 3800 it was producing over 80% of its peak hp at this rpm, as your engine revs considerably higher its most likely to produce peak torque around 45-4700 rpm the big question is how much hp does it produce at this rev range, if we say 220hp then torque would be around 250 lbs/ft quite a lot

It could be even more than that, the champ is a high revver, and could produce less max torque than a bone stock 260
remember a diesel turns slow rpm,s but makes a whole lot of torque.

The Drag has a different intake though, and tighter compression heads.
Cant remember where i sourced this screenshot from but it shows 186 ft/tq at 8175 rpm

Had a hunt through all my old Merc racing stuff nowhere can I find torque figures just 260hp @ 7500rpm, so before I go to bed I think I will stick at my guess as we know peak torque will probably fall in the the region of 4.5k - 4.8 k and if hp is around 220 ish then something around the 250 mark cant be a million miles out ?
