transom cooling pickup?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to make up a transom pickup for my xr2 an the cat... Basically i'm concerned it's not getting enough water as it's running the standard gearbox, and i don't fancy gettng a new one!

I've figured out how i'm going to do it, but what size do you think i should make the pickup? I was thinking about 1/2" round, but i don't know what would happen if i make it too big? I'm worried it might foce water into places it shouldn't be!

I'm also going to fit a hose connnector into the feed pipe to make flushing easier

Thanks,

James

Hi James

The area will make no difference to the pressure, only the speed or the angle that it faces forward will. You want to make the diameter including any hoses and fittings at least the same as the transfer tube from the pump to the adapter plate, Usually 1/2"

Bobs Machine Shop in the states make a kit for a few $

Fantastic! thanks for that, a great answer! I was planning on going for a 1/2" pickup, I just realised i was being a bit thick about the pressure question!
I've had a look at the bob's setup, but given the shape of the back of my sponsons i'll have to make my own. I've had a look on screm and fly and found loads of info there too
I'll post up some progress for everyone incase anyone else goes down this route.

Thanks

James

Is it worth having two inlets? If something catches around your 1/2" one, the water supply will stop dead. Just a thought.

If it's the old CLE, the adaptor goes on the side of the pump housing (there's a blanking plate fitted there as standard) so it kinda gets two pickups anyway, as the nostrels in the lower bullet remain. This probably acted as a pressure relief on the 4 L cats, as they had the bullet tucked up behind the transom in those days, with nowt but the skeg showing below the running surface. (assuming the set up didn't have the motors in the tunnel)

Back in the good old days of remote pickups on the 4 litre boats, they were generally 3/4" tubular pickups & flexi hoses onto the pump adaptor plate.
