Transom rebuild on Don Shead TigerShark
Hi, so a friend and I have got what we believe to be a Don Shead Tigershark 65 21ft
She was in great condition except everything that's not fiberglass.
So, we started re-building the transom today, i've seen a few rotten transoms, soft spots etc, but ours had a root structure in it, worms and was warm due to it actually composting.
We'll be putting the new transom in next weekend, we're doing it in a way that we build the transom outside the boat in three layers, then we'll be cutting it into three pieces per layer, in a manner that all the joins are spaced at least ten cm apart, and all the but joins are scarfed by at least 45degrees and glued with slightly thickened epoxy, this is so we can fit it all within the 10cm lip we left in the existing transom to allow for us to bevel the glass to the sides of the boat and give us maximum surface area to glass on the new epoxy transom, the scarf joins on the plywood will be stronger than the wood itself if you were to try and break it, and the lip we've left should give us a decent area for adhesion.
The stringers will need replacing to a certain point also, but we'll tackle them after we've replaced the transom core.
Any advice will be welcome, this isn't my first rodeo when it comes to boat repair, but probably the biggest task i've had to do so far. Also, if anybody wants to know more I shall be happy to share.
Vids coming when they upload.
