Water intakes

Hi, when fitting "through hull" water intakes, for cooling engines, is there anywhere best suited to fitting these? I would like to keep them as far towards the stern as possible, if that´s ok and good practice.

Thanks

Pete

I only just noticed this.

My first boat had inboard jag engine in it, and if i remember rightly the water pick up was as far aft and as low as possible obviously so it is submerged, but the intake grill was facing aft too, i think as not to force more water in than the engine or pump can handle when at high speed.

There was a notch in the hull which the intake fitted into so was flush with the hull, that way it cant get knocked off and water poor in. Hope this helps.

Thank You Carl, for taking the time to answer. Points taken. I am adding intakes for a re power. Legs don´t have water pickups. I am just concerned that I remember hearing, airiated water and propelors don´t mix well.

I´m sure there´s many "in the know" on here but they must have missed this thread.

Thanks again

Pete

Cyco has made us some transom mounted pickups for the new boat if you want transom mounted ones?

Thanks Matt, yes, you´ll have to come and have a peek. Going to UK Next Thursday, to collect engines. Will be back on 25th. What it "The CL"?

Thanks cookee, I have bought stainless through hull fittings, sea cocks and water strainers, all being delivered to a uk address, as we speak. Thanks for the idea though. Just wanted to be sure of the best possition, to mount them.

I guess CL is centre line? Thinking along these lines, this should keep any disturbance further inboard than the props? Is any disturbance from the intakes a problem?

I was thinking of putting them through the hull, about 8" in from the transom and wide enough apart,, so as not to obstruct each other, inside the engine bay. I wondered if offsetting them would also be a problem, one 8" from transom and the other 12" from transom, allowing them to be closer to the centre line.

I would really appreciate any further advice on this. I know there are a lot of you guys who know about this type of instalation, please offer some advice.

Pete
