Cool what is the small pipe between gearbox upwards

Hi, can anyone out there tell me what the small pipe running out from the top of the gearbox up inside the steering hinge then goes into the engine and what looks like some kid of electrical sensor is .This has i think come apart at the top of the box i have run and nothing seems to be going wrong .I have smartcraft guages on the engine and all is ok.ps this is on a mercury promax 300x. Thanks in advance.

Pitot tube? what speedo have you got?

Hi Tris Nick here hows it on the island go and have a look the boats in your yard but i think the speedo runs of off seperate unit on the transom as it is working albeit about 10mph short.

Will look in the morning Nick. let you know. may just be the speed pitot tube. if its taken off the transom the gearbox tube will just be unused. there is a tiny hole at the front of the gearbox that the water passes through to give speed readings.

was pitot tube Nick that is dormant as your boat uses paddle wheel on transom. probably 10mph down due to the fact it spends most the time out of the water haha.

Cheers mate,your not wrong about out of the water , i dont think its touched the Solent this season!!! lol. Mind you did perform superb in Spain (80mph sunburn). See you on the island soon.

Hi! Your pitot speedmeasurement is probably a bit inaccurate...
Keep also in mind you measure the relative speed to the water, which is by definition different from your GPS measurement. When you race on a river with a lot of current like I do, the difference is quite significant !
