What Performance mods to mercruiser 4.3

WIth the 4.3 v6 mercruisers found in many boats is there an economic? way to bump up the hp to give them some decent performance? Same question for the 5.0? Would like to find a quick boat but many of the (more practical) candidates are tad sedate.

Probably cheaper and easier to fit a bigger engine.
