Wing Plate questions

So we've made an MDF template for a wing plate to fit a Mayfair ram on my Evinrude. The geometry is sorted, the ram runs out of travel just before the steering stops both ways, and clears the cowl nicely.

What thickness 316 should I use? I'm thinking 12mm or is that overkill? Also the the ram only clears the cowl if it's mounted underneath the plate, will this be ok? I've seen some that have an additional plate mounted with spacers to put the ram bolt in a double shear arrangement, is this necessary?

Lastly any recommendations for somewhere I can send the template to have it water, laser or plasma cut? Don't really fancy spending hours with cutting discs and flap wheels!!

Cheers!

Paul

Paul, our waterjet arrives in 2 weeks time! Carry on with the boat and we'll get it done in plenty of time!

But I want it noooooww!!

I'll have the template finished today, get my saddle bits back tomorrow so the sooner I have the wing plate the sooner it can all go together and in the water! What kind of turn-around time does Simon have? I'll let you draw it if you want Larby haha, you can use your new toy to trace it

Screw that, easier to scan it and work from there!

I'd use Simon if you want it watercut now, he was great doing our trophies and turned them around in a matter of days.

We can still mill it out, can do a nice radius on the edges that way too, I could fit it in next week for you along with the batery box etc. That's the way we've done all the rest of the local ones. Don't have to piss about finishing edges and polishing that way either.

Could you not just use the MDF one? Coat of epoxy and it should be fine.

I don't have any epoxy, will satin varnish be ok?

I'll bring the template down tomorrow Larby, might make room to engrave Bernico onto it haha

Yep, wouldn't be a problem!!

For the MDF one, use a nice coat of PVA glue to seal it in!
