XR2 lower unit

Hi!!

Last owner of the engine said that lower unit don't like to change gears when engine is started. Why is that??
He said that I have to start the engine when gear is on drive or neutral or reverse. Why can't I change it when it is started??

MIKE

It will change gear whilst running, but with the large stainless props typically fitted to race engines, it is normal to start them in gear to put less stress on the gears (it's an inertia thing).

You can remove the microswitch which is the ingear start protection, with that disconnected that then allows you to start in gear.

Ok but how to maneuver in harbour?? Somethimes I have to put reverse while it is running
I understand that it is safer to start it on gear but if I have to do other way how dangerous it is for the transom??
Can I do it somethimes or better not to do it ever??
I mean changing gears on idle not 2000rpm

you can flick from fwd to reverse whilst idling but it does put a massive jolt through the gearbox and also does not do a lot for the bearing in the prop. What we used to do was turn off the ignition flick it in to reverse and then fire up again which should not be a problem if the engine is heated up etc.
