Yamaha 200hpdi not starting

Hi,

Not used the boat much this year, but has been without fault when I have. Until now. I went to go out at the weekend and one of my engines is refusing to start.

When I turn the key the gauge comes to life as it should, when I go to start the engine. Nothing. Doesn't even try. When I remove the cover I can hear a click when the ignition is turned on and a faint whuring noise coming from the bottom of the engine. So I assume power is getting to the engine ok.

I need to check the starter motor with a volt meter to see if there is power getting to it, but if it is not a dead starter motor where do I look next?

Any help appreciated!

Cheers

I also had this problem so was advised to unplug the loom clean it check the tongs bit of wd40 & it worked. Could be the same problem & worth a check before spending money.

Thanks for the reply.

Do you know where the loom is and where I should disconnected it?

Cheers

Sounds like a starter motor. Check you are getting 12v down your crank wire to the solenoid. If not you have a wiring fault, if you have it will probably be the starter.

Finally got the boat back home and have started to try and work out what is wrong with the engine.

I tried disconnecting and cleaning the loom connections but that did not make a difference.

There is power going to the starter motor so I went looking for the starter relay. I have power to the positive on the relay and if you bypass the relay the engine turns over.

There are three wires that I can see on the relay, a positive power lead and a lead that then goes to the starter motor. There is one other lead and I assume this is to tell the relay to work when I turn the ignition. So this should mean that when the ignition is on to start the engine I should get a signal from this lead on my multimeter. But I am not, so I am assuming the relay is not getting the signal to start the motor and this is my problem.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? Sensor etc?

Cheers
