Newbie here and ring21 owner

Hi guys.

This is my first post here and one of many i hope. Just in the process of buying out my two mates in our share of a Ring21 we have owned for nearly two years. Its called Budwiser if anyone has seen it. Has not been used since last summer but been stored inside. It is a red ring21 with a Yamaha225 on it. Dont know much about it as we just used to get in and go.It does needs alot of tlc as it was an x race boat and last raced on lock Loman. Have not seen the boat for ages as its been in storage so i cant remember race number etc but will find out this week. I will post some pics soon, as i was hoping if you guys could tell me more about it.
I might use this year as is or strip it and rebuild it. It has powerlift which is not working very well needs bleeding all the time and i dont know why?? plus it has trim tabs and not sure how they work as there is no hydrolics with them just the tabs, is this right. We belive or shall i say we were told the engine has been tuned but i dont know how true this is all thou its really loud and sounds amazing.
Another thing i need some info on is what prop to run as i have to buy a new one(long story) and need to know where to start as its a mine field to me. I am after mid to top speed???. Also where can i buy thing like hydrolic steering systems trim tab set ups and props etc.

Dont know much about the boat but i'm sure people on here will be able to tell you some history. You can find out the serial no. and year by looking under the deck as there will be a complements slip glassed in.
Need to know gearbox ratio before any advice can be given about props

Steve, welcome aboard. Despite you having a Ring & not a Phantom, a few pics of your boat would be nice.
For the prop help include rpm's & speed along with info on present prop.

The prop thing isn't a long story. The tide went out and you let a mate drive the boat. Its happened to us all..

your lifter prob needs bleeding all the time because the seals on the ram are shot so it leaks.

can you post a pic of your trim tabs?
they may be the lenco type which are electric actuators so no hydraulics there.
as Burty said, before you can decide on the correct prop for your setup you will need to know your gear ratio and max rpm of the engine.


If your going for max speed you should go for a small hub/or over hub exhaust this enables the engine to let the prop slip and spin up when getting up on plain, this means you can also have a bigger pitch prop.

if you post some more info on the engine then someone may be able to help identify it and give some more information.

I do remember a Red Ring 21 that done ski racing and i am sure it had a Yam on it, Vic Murray used to drive it for Glen Tompkins, some1 correct me if i am wrong about the engine!!!

No Daz your right about the Yam but the red Ring Vic Murray drove was definitely a 20. I still remember the day he took me for a ride in it, I was scared sh**less. I don't think he will mind if I say he never really managed to come to terms with driving a Ring, after that he went back to Phantoms.

Gary, Vic took my dad out in that Ring, he said to my dad that it was all over the place, Dad drove it and it was fine!!!

Yeah, I drove it as well. That doesn't stop me waking up in a cold sweat when I remember the short bit of ski line tied to the high observer seat mount which was the only thing supposed to keep me in the boat! Vic had no confidence in the boat and that's how he drove it.

Hi guys

thanks for the replys. Still have not had time to get down the yard and get some photos, but i promise i will do it as soon as because i need to get it out the workshop and give a good clean and check over and get spec of motor etc.

Funny everyone seems to say ring's are not as good to drive as Phantoms. Everytime we go out in this boat it scares the pants of us. it seems like you have to have loads of bottle to go flat out, it seems very unpredictable. The last owner who we knew did a complete 180 deg turn going very fast which put im to a complete stop. he never went that fast again and never trusted it again. Seen vids of phantoms and they seem loads more stable at speed.
Not sure how fast this boat is but my GP1300R yam jet ski has been GPS confirmed at 67 in standard trim and the ring just flys by like i am stood stil.

Hi Steve

Thats not really the case mate. Im on my second ring now and can honestly say that how they run and how stable they feel is all down to set up.

I was running my 21 with 250 xl coscast merc and it was not well setup! In fact at higher speeds it was dam scary. Chine walked and just felt like it was always on the edge. Changed engine to an XR2 and it now runs like a peach. Very stable and handles v well at high speeds!

Same can be said for phantoms too. If their set up badly they will handle very badly.

Just my opinion though mate but would hope that the other guys would agree
