3B Continental Championships

Team-ATS (B28) will be starting off this morning on their epic 700 mile journey overland to Tvedestrand in Norway to compete as Britain's only UK entry in the 3B European Championships.

SEPA would like to wish Sharon and Gavin (from Malta) the best of luck in their quest to be successful with their 20' Tintorera/90 Yamaha entry. Sharon has been helped by various fellow competitors and benefactors, as well as by the Norwegian race organisors themselves, to allow her to be able to take part in this race and she would like to extend her public thanks for the support and time they have given to make this possible.

We will endeavour to keep you updated of her progress on this thread by posting news as and when we receive it. Heat 1 starts on Thursday 7th July at 15:30 local time with Heat 2 on Friday 8th at 16:00.

I only hope Ian has cable tied the engine cowl on this time!

GOOD LUCK & SAFE RACING

News from Norway today ( practice day ) is that Sharon blew her race engine on the way down to the coarse. A quick power head change and she managed to get out but was down on revs ( the spare is a bog std unit). Apparently they have new pistons arriving, so fingers crossed the race engine will be back on for the races.

Update from Barrie ..

Update from Barrie ..

Unfortunately, today's first heat of the 3B CC in Tvedestrand, Norway, had to be red flagged just before the fourth lap when an incident involving a Norwegian race boat exhausted the medical cover. The crew of the Argocat 17 were taken to hospital but the injuries were not considered to be critical.

The race had failed to achieve the minimum 60 minute time elapsed or 30 nm distance and was declared null and void at 18.00 local time.

Friday's second race will be extended to 62 nm and will count as the European championship.

The race was tortoise and hare, with Sharon Atlee and Gavin Galea in eigth place at the end of lap 1 and fourth place by the end of lap 2. Navigation played a critical part in the race and navigators were seriously tested in finding their way through the beautiful, rocky islands and fjords.

When we raced there for the World III C champs one of the marks was a rusty scaffold pole on a small dark rock, and you approached it from seawards making it very hard to pick out against the similar coloured background - great fun! (But I had a great navigator!)

Flying the flag for UK

3B Boat Parade through the town...................

Piston being run as we speak and engine going up! Gavin going in the back through the islands before hitting the high seas! Let you know how the plan works later.

Results of the 3B European Championship in Tvedestrand, Norway.

1st B3 Andre Knutsen/Espen Knutsen (Norway) Argocat 17/Yamaha 90

2nd B81 Jorn Vibeto/Morten Kittisland (Norway) Twister 18/Yamaha 90

3rd B77 Tobias Munthe-Kass/Mirell Victoria Kirchner (Norway) Mannerfelt19/Yamaha 90

7th B28 Sharon Atlee/Gavin Galea (UK) Tintorera 20/Yamaha 90

Weather: Rain Windspeed: 1m/sec Conditions: Flat calm

Winner's average speed 60 knots (69 mph)

The calm sea suited the catamarans who averaged almost 70 mph. The winning Argocat and the second placed Twister produced a nail-biting battle for the lead, while Tobias Munthe-Kass captured a credible third place in the B19 monohull by displaying the same style of driving as he does in his World F4.

GB's Sharon Atlee and Malta's Gavin Galea tried desperately to find some wave lift, but their monohull was never going to catch the cats in the millpond conditions.

The Norwegian crew who crashed in the first heat were discharged from hospital the same day suffering black eyes and mild concussion.

In terms of organisation, the Norwegians have got it right, they've simplified their procedures and race administration, which frees them to concentrate effort on the important things.

Are they still allowing dodgy fuel or is that sorted now?

All use 99 octane, which is available at the pump in most gas stations.
Scrutineering was very detailed, carried out by Christoffer Kjeil. Very minute vernier measuring. They have gathered so much knowledge over there, that everyone knows how far they can go before exclusion. Just a shame that the 115 HO didn't come out to play.

Regarding that 4km start run from muster area in the town to Sandvik pier - it was awesome - we could hear the boat roar increasing in volume but couldn't see them until they came around the rock and past us at 80 mph. Hairs on your neck and all that. Incredible scenery, no speed limits and everyone loves speed. In the Fjordloppen race on Saturday, there were 90 mph jetskis, Thundercats, circuit racers, historics, OCR and 3B & 3C cats all racing at the same time. One RIB racer was over 90 years old and complete with teamwear, iphone and a young bird of 75 holding his helmet.
