Basic Equipment ...?
According to PB1 (specific rules for basic races)
M1(k)(i) - "valid distress signals (minimum of 2 - e.g orange smoke or a mini flare pack [1 pack per person])"
Can anyone confirm whether this means that i need flares for the boat AND personal flares .. or is it as i read it .. one or the other?
Thanks Ashleigh

You'll need both I'm afraid - a set of mini flares per crew member on your person and some smokes for the boat. Not forgetting paddles, a line double the length of the boat , manual bilge pump etc - if it is possible the scrutineers like it all laid out for them when they come round to inspect the boat, but it isn't in the rules - they will also check your helmets, seat fixings, operation of nav lights, engine mounts and kill switches plus whatever else they are in the mood to check on the day - it sounds worse than it is and it is very rare to get one that tries to trip you up on purpose - especially as a beginner - they try to be helpful! Also make sure your numbers are the right size and your union jack or red ensign are the right size - another favourite!

Also refer to E1 Table for any clarification points
You are quite correct to question as the Book says OR not both but the E1 would indicate both
Ref Para M below
(k) (1) The following safety equipment is mandatory per boat: fire extinguisher/s minimum 2 kgs; a hand bilge pump; two mooring lines; an anchor suitable for the boat and an anchor line of adequate length; two paddles; a towing eye; engine cut-out switch (see E11 for specification); an orange flag minimum size 60cm X 40cm; date valid distress signals (minimum of two – e.g. orange smoke or a mini flare pack [1 pack per person]).
*****RYA take note before going to print bit of tidying required there ****

Mini Flare pack per person is all you need for basic !! although you will need a full class 3 compliment of Flares when you go to national !!

For relevance I think you will find a Bakdraft isn't eligible for OCR!

I was tempted to really let go, but most members don't know the manos history, so it woulda been wasted.
