Best wishes to Cowes competitors from HORBA
Aug 23, 1969. Forty one years ago today, Don Aronow raced his 32 foot Cary called...The Cigarette, in the Hennessey offshore race in California. He also had a customer at the same race, taking delivery of his new 32 foot Cary, Peter Rothschild...his boat was called Thunderballs.
Don showed the young driver how to trim the boat throughout the race and at the end, Don won in The Cigarette with Thunderballs second by 5 seconds.
HORBA is happy to announce that Thunderballs has just been donated to us by a very generous HORBA member in California.
The tie in here??? One week later, 41 years ago, Don won the Cowes race in The Cigarette setting a new speed record for the era. Clive Curtis was his navigator for the race that year.
HORBA wants to wish all of the competitors the very best of luck in this year's 50th anniversary. We sure wish we were there with you.
