That was NOT bluebird today. It's a replica, and apparently, not a particularly accurate one. That said, it appears to be the right colour and makes some of the right noises.

We managed a run of 70+mph one way with some porpoising which held the speed down- this was our first flat water experience so we have gained a lot from the last two days.

Well done to Nick and Jon - we have something to aim for!

For the record wewere running with 260hp a side, and around 3200kg approx. the boat is 33'10" UIM length and around 38' overall, with some mapping and different props we should be capable of chasing Swipewipes record!

Judge for yourself. I think it's beautiful, and the craftsmanship is nothing short of awesome.
It's not trying 'to be' Bluebird, there's no BB name, logo or anything like that, and the polished nose (rather than the original blue) is to emphasise this.

Main frame is different,, and the alloy skin is welded rather than rivited, plus it houses a Burgess 'cell', so a modern take on BB. Same Bristol Orpheous motor Bluebird ran in its final guise.

I had the privilege of meeting Charles Morris who has built this (and owns it) and his son Sam, who along with the team are a great bunch, incredibly enthusiastic, and whilst this is a tribute to Campbell & Bluebird, the hope is to learn plenty about high speed water craft & gas turbines, in order to use that knowledge for something a lot more serious!

Quite spooky seeing this boat, on that slipway, at Pier Cottage, having seen so many pics of campbell there, and of course across the lake etc.

Back to topic....

...we settled at a new record of 74.52mph yesterday (a 16+mph increase on the speed it did when new in '08), back next year for 80.

We think it might have crept over 75 if we'd tried the 30's again with the lower wind speed yesterday, but ran out of time, as the crane (needed for weighing the boat post record) was leaving at lunchtime. Still, leaves room for improvement.

I think they must have had some help from a few Surrey folk or at least some advice (bet they've had plenty of 'you don't wanna do it like that!' type help ha ha)

It's gorgeous!

Gina's far from happy (have the texts to verify) but I think it's a great tribute, and am sure it'll be seen and enjoyed by thousands, as will the REAL BB when it's finished, they're two completely different things though, so it seems a shame to get upset.

good to see you yesterday.
