Cowes event 2006

I've just had a phone call from Rory Power, who's trying to get the Cowes event sorted for later this month.

He's asked that I post this message on the forum in the hope that he can get a request out to a few of the enthusiasts that will undoubtedly be going out to enjoy the long weekend's racing.

Basically, the harbour masters are insisting on a greater number of marshal boats this year, as they're concerened about racing taking place in & around the Solent on a busy bank holiday.

The main concerns are with the racing on Friday, and Saturday (the busy basic race is now on the saturday)

They're just about there with their needs for safety boats, so no one would be expected to be leaping in the drink, or pulling racers out of damaged boats, it's more the marshalling that they need help with, to keep the general publlic away from the racing line.

The long & short of it is, if they can't show the harbour masters that they have the number of boats stipulated to do this task, Cowes won't be happening!!!

So, If anyone is in a position to help during this event with making yourselves & your boat available as a marshall, please, please PM me, and I'll put you in contact with Rory who'll get you sorted.

There must be a few ex racers out there who wanna put a bit back in (again)
I stopped doing the safety/marshall/mark boat thing a couple of years ago, as I thought I'd done my bit, but will be helping again this year, as they really do need the numbers.

C'mon fellas, wad'ya say.

JF

Interesting point you raise there: That the round the Island is moved to Saturday. Why is that? Is there no racing Sunday?

I know that I will definately not risk the around the island if there is a Sunday National race. I am sure many others feel the same way.

Do you have any information?

Does anyone have information? It seems a few details are leaking out, as Scotty Boy mentioned this yesterday ( ie the round the island would be before the final national event )

In P1, the racing format is always the longer race on Saturday (Endurance) and the shorter race on Sunday (rally) ... thus the reason Round the Island is on the Saturday.

No Cowes-Torquay-Cowes anymore sadly

That, and probably the QHM may be twitchy about raceboats and Sunday boat traffic at the Start / Finish. Not so much the Start cos they can shut the river entrance for a few minutes, but the finish is difficult with everyone taking a different time to complete the course.

Just a thought......

Because the Harbour control are very concerned about safety, and that the bank holiday weekend is likely to be very busy in the Solent, the race with the largest fleet (basic, round the island) is going to run on Saturday, because the harbour people think Sunday is probably gonna be the busier of the two as far as recreational pleasure boats go.

The national race is to be held on the sunday, with it's fewer entries.

As you say Marc, many crews won't want to risk breaking their equipment on the Saturday, if there's an 'important' national race the next day.
But hey, I get the impression that this re-organising of the schedule, is very much a compromise to keep the authorities happy, and not something the Cowes organisers wan't at all.

So, we'll all have to go along with it, or the event may not even happen!

Would it be worth shifting the start/finish east slightly so the boats don't cross cowes harbour entrance to finish. Or go the other way round so they finish west of cowes and are off the plane before they approach the harbour entrance

Could well be.

As I suspect Rory will be keeping an eye on this thread, he'll see the suggestion.

If need be, I own a pair of hands. However the brain that controls them may prove to be a greater hinderance than help!

Open offer to anyone that needs it. Both myself and Amanda (Mazur - Ben's daughter) are in Cowes for the whole weekend (Fri-Mon) and although we have no boat, are willing to be helpful in any other boating way - lines, radios, safety boat crew etc etc etc. Amanda says shes good at Start Flags (see pics from last year)!!! Anyway any help required whether on water or land, let us know.

Sad.
But such is life. If it is flat and calm I may try. If it looks boat battering, I will just do the national.

Do we have a timetable?
