Was mored/official buoy berthed in Salcombe last monday/tuesday. Was changing props at the back in my 3m tender, got hit twice by small yatchs racing. On mentioning Collision at sea avoidance RYA rules (ie. give vessels at anchor wide berth), I was told "I am racing, F...k off".
In 1 hour period 15 yachts came within 1 ft of my officially anchored boat. (yes I had a few kittens!!). If racing power boats come within a 100 metres of a yacht while racing they get reported to all including the dept of transport.
The majority of yacht owners are sensible, however the few idiots are never reprimanded. This needs to change. the RYA needs to be fair to all water users.
If I berth in Salcombe again during a yacht regatta I will be keeping my engines running and trimmed up. 100 gallons of water in their boat may put them of coming so close to a mored vessel!!!!

Anyone know what the deal is with classes in the basic race?
Heard today that there aren't any and it's all for overall?!?
Didn't like the sound of that as we can't compete with the V24's let alone boats such as gary payne's 1.3ltr backdraft...

You may have anchored in the middle of their race course - if so, wouldn't it have been courteous to move off their racing line?

Funnily enough Cookee I was also in Salcombe 11/12 August moored about 200 yds north of to the new recycling barge. What sort of waste of money is that ? ! What was wrong with the old system ? When we arrived we were presented by the harbour master's launch girl with a pack of very smart non biodegradable plastic rubbish sorting containers, that probably cost the council about a fiver a set ! We watched two or three people arrive at the barge and then just chuck all their litter in the assorted rubbish bin, which was full so the next people left black bags on the deck, ten minutes later the guls had torn them open and distributed the rubbish everywhere leaving a hell of a mess, as ever the greens of this country are too powerful !
Should have called you to meet up for a beer ...

Beer would have been good - make sure you call next time!
The recycling is - as usual - a good idea, but only if executed properly - of course it's over run for 2 / 3 weeks a year and the rest of the time works fine!

Planned to be down for the week, visiting the in-laws. Stayed for day and a half only, due to awfull 5 day weather forecast. Only upside was only spent £140 on fuel, & £40 of that was in the kids little rib. Just as well at the fuel barge prices!!!
As for someones comment about racing line. I was placed on an official berth by the harbour master, 20 yds from the estuary shore & 70 yds from the centre chanel. Apparently yachts avoid the tidal current by hugging the estuary shore. Must remember that when racing, berthed boats or not!! NO I WON'T I WILL STICK TO THE RULES, safer that way!!
Cheers

Sorry Matt, I was just trying to make the situation clear & no malice or non-calm state was supposed to be implied. However at the time of incident/yacht race I was definitely not very calm.
I saw your beautiful, well presented boat the other day, I'm sure you would not have been happy with lots of 3/5m yachts doing 6/7 knots just missing your boat by inches. Especially for 2 hours!!

Cheers
