Derek Lloyd R.i.p.

Sadly Derek has passed away. he fought cancer up until last week when he succumbed peacefully in his sleep.

His memorial service will be held at mortlake crematorium on thursday 23rd june at 4pm.

His orbituary can be read in ''The Times''. there is a guest book for people to sign.
Our thoughts are with Jayne at this time.

Derek has been a fanatical powerboat racer for many years, having navigated for class 1 monohulls in the early 70's winning ''the needles race'', also the 1984 round britain race amongst many others.
I regretfully only met him in later years and am not fully aware of his racing achievements; hopefully some of you ladies and gents can enlighten his obituary with his exploits.

Very Sad, one of the real characters from back in the day.
Lots of tales about his exploits, in particular I remember Fiona Arran spat him out of her three pointer at Bournemouth rounding the buoy and carried on without him for some time, which was surprising as he was never lost for words!

Derek was a larger than life charachter - one instance I remember on the roof of The RYS while Brian Jones, Peter Bloomfield, Peter Butler, myself & 'the team' were commentating on The Cowes Races.
Derek & Jane arrived & set themselves up, sitting alongside us on the red & white roof, which of course is curved.
Anyway, an unfortunate incident involving a glass of red wine which I knocked over & which in turn ran down & stained Derek's whites, caused some alarm & initial anger !
Anyway, all was soon forgotten & Derek was his usual font of knowledge & geniality.
There was another instance of loosing the Needles Trophy Race for an Italian boat at Poole, by navigating the wrong side of the mark boat !
He 'escaped' by hiding in a house near the RMYC from itrate Italians !
I have heard from Rory Power, now working for Victory Team in The Gulf, of how Derek was a great help to him, & how he of course, being out there, cannot attend Dereks Funeral tomorrow at Mortlake Crematorium.
RIP Derek, we will remember you !

How sad, spent some time with Derek in Abu Dhabi in the early 90's while I was out there with Geoff Purves, he was doing the commentary there.....quite a character.
