End of season Round The Island race

See that in the calendar there is still the V24 Club / Marc's Round The Island Race - down for 15th November.

Anyone know if this is still on?

Hi Adam, for what its worth - we heard last Friday at Clubs & Classes mtg at the RYA, that Marc Lamont had stated that he would NOT be running any races.
While that was really angled at 2009, it seemed from conversations etc that day, that he is not actively running any events at present, so asume that would include the race on the calendar you mention.

Hi Adam,

This race is not going to be run.

The simple reason is that the RYA fees are too high to make the event viable.

I am constantly supprised and impressed that guys like ORCDA manage to put on events like they do year after year for the fees they charge.

However:

At the begining of this year, in conjunction with Drivers Dry Berthing, we had agreed to use this event as a fundraiser for charity like we had last year. It seemed a pity that the charity should not get out fundraising because of high fees. So I chatted today with Gill from Drivers and she has suggested the following:

The end of season Round the Island Race be replaced by an end of season Round the Island Ralley with a hog roast finisher.

This is *not* a race nor is it a poker run. It is a group of like minded boaters going around the island then heading back for some food and a chat about the event. This event will be free. Free in that there is no entry fee of any description. That is the sort of pricing I like. There will be no scrutineering, no special rules, no classes or the like. There will be no prizes, awards or trophies. Round the island will be timed for personal curiosity and to keep a eye out for fellow boaters, to ensure they do actually make it round and back.

To help raise the money for charity (as was our original plan) Drivers Dry Berthing will offer a special Launch and Recover fee of 60 which will include entry to the Hog Roast after the event. Two crew per boat will be included in the Hog Roast as part of the launch fee. Half the launch fee will make up the charity donation. Additional crew or family can attend the Hog Roast for 5, 2 of which will go to the charity.

The V24 Powerboat Club and Drivers Dry Berthing will cover the cost of the Hog Roast, so that there should not be any shortfall and the charity should then get their money.

Fundraising is part of this event, but it is also a good cheap last run of the season run for most boats.

Any boat can attend.

There is no entry fee.

Boats not requiring a launch will be encoraged to make a donation to the charity, but no fee in any form will be charged for those boats who wish to participate.

Sounds good - better go and fit my new steering!

Might join in as you pass Yarmouth, if don't get to Drivers before.

Hello Peeps

We at Drivers are organising a bit of fun in aid of the Childrens Trust Charity.

We want as many people as possible to come down and use their boats in order for the kids from the charity to come and have a gander at them.

There is no format as such just turn up whenever use you boat/not use your boat its up to you! Just come and have a bit of a natter, use it as excuse to meet up again!

I'm afraid there are no cakes on offer but we will put on a hog rost and the whole day will be finished by 4.00pm so no excuses

Round the Island:

I intend to leave Drivers at 10am, to go to a point approximately 400 meters North of Egypt point (approximately 50 46' 10", 01 18' 50" w ) from where I will time any interested boats who wish to make a timed around the island trip. So I will get onto station at about 10h30 I will stay in place for about 2 hours to time the boats on their return. Then at about 12h45 I will return to Drivers Dry Berthing.

As I will be in the Bladerunner, I will probably need to be towed back.....

Around the Island is about 85 miles from Drivers to Drivers.

For those who dont wish to make the trip around the Island, but still want a trip, there is the posibility of a course taking in the needles on the west of Cowes, accross to Milford, then returning to Drivers via Egypt point. - this is about 50 miles from Drivers to Drivers

Finally - if you dont want to go too far out - or if the weather is completely shyte - we may just go out to Gurnard and return to drivers for some food and chat. This short trip is about 24 miles, most of it semi sheltered. But still hairy in the Solent in the weather is not great.

The hog roast starts at 1.30pm

Should all be finished by 4pm

Any questions on launching / facilities etc - please chat to Gareth or Gill at drivers.

If this 'event' is successfull, then we will probably put on several more in 2009. The plan at this time is to keep these future events within the same price structure - free.
