Fiona, Countess Of Arran
For those of you who have long memories I have to report the sad passing of Lady Arran; yesterday, 16th May of old age.
As many may remember she was a stalwart of the sport:
At one stage holding the Women's World Water Speed record and also the electric speed World Record Holder
She was also the World Offshore powerboat speed record holder in Highland Fling on Windermere in 1971. She was the first women over 100MPH in Skean Dhu.
I had the privilege of racing with her in class 2 in about 1989 in Granny Arran with Roger Bowley a three pointer with small block inboards and surface drives that never really showed its potential.
She always used to take a flask of suitably strong alcohol in the boat when racing for when she needed perking up !
Her funeral will be at the Castlehill Estate Church, Filleigh, Devon on Friday 24th May at noon.

Sad to hear - but she certainly led a full life.
I was just a youngster starting out racing in her days with Skean Dhu - but always found she had time to talk and was a real character.

That's real spooky!
I found myself wondering about her yesterday, thinking I hadn't heard any news of her in ages and wondering if she was ok. I was planning an event in Scotland, and looking at the maps I saw the Isle of Arran and that triggered me to think of her.
very sad.

I remember going to a London UKOBA Powerboat Ball in 1983 (with Pennpromo).
When the dancing started, I found myself sitting next to Lady Arran.
She said, "Isn't the music loud - The Sport is so full of barrow boys these days"?
I informed her I was one of those young barrow boys, "Oh Jolly Good, get me another drink and I will tell you about my racing plans to do Round Britain next year".

Lady Arran
More spooky stuff - I was watching an old CTC video last night in which she was interviewed.
I don't think they make women like her these days!
The sport needs characters of her ilk.
May she rest in peace.

Here you are Carl, raced against her in my own Revenger. So many memories of her racing with us in Cruiser Class in those days. What a fun women especially when she raced with Lady Vi. They had usually had quite a few "snifters" before they hit the start line and we would hear them shrieking with laughter at something or other. Classic line, "Mike, Colin Stewart is going far too fast, he MUST be cheating mustn't he?". Great fun days, now frowned upon by those in charge.

Fiona
I had the honor of racing with her during the Skean Dhu days and world records, she was the first person in the world to break the 100 MPH barrier in any offshore powerboat and then subsequently in the first Laura Lucy. She was a truly fascinating icon and was always trying to find that extra mile and hour. She was always full of new ideas and not afraid to get her hands dirty working alongside myself and John Leighton into the night getting ready for the next adventure. A true competitor and plain super person. I will miss her although living in the States had lost contact in the recent years. She definately led a life that most would have been happy to done a quarter of what she achieved!
