Oh, ok, so what's with the FIDDYKOBA website blowing their trumpet and saying it's their event?

Thanks Bob,
The UKOBA website was rather vague, to say the least, as to which classes were making up ‘THE BIGGEST POWERBOAT FESTIVAL IN THE WORLD FOR 2010’. Perhaps at this stage if they just concentrated on ‘Who, What, Where, When and Why’ rather than take a pot shot at the Cowes Festival everyone would be better informed.
Hope it goes well for OCRDA and all the clubs involved, anything that helps improve the sports profile can only be a good thing. Suggest UKOBA should look for someone else to write their website.

You can say what you like, but I'm looking forward to 150 boats at least finishing the RB12 under Tower Bridge in Lodnon...

No chance. If RB12 are allowed to run up and down the Thames from and to Tower Bridge just before the Olympics I'll eat my hat, figuratively speaking of course.

Actually, now I've finished laughing...
It's appallingly written, not very politically correct, even slightly lecherous... ok, quite alot lecherous... there's practically drool running down the page... and makes powerboat racing look bad.

It seems that they somehow managed to contact the promoter of the proposed event, demanding an additional £40k for Honda to attend, along with demands for their own helicopter, and a seperate start.
Sadly, Honda won't be attending now, as they've been told the extras wouldn't be happening, and were no longer invited. So, Honda had it on a plate, and lost it due to one or two greedy individuals.

So there you have it.....Not only did Honda want a huge amount of money on top of all the good things on offer (and a helicopter, and their own start) but they go straight to the promoter and not to the event organiser, putting the rest of the whole event in jeopardy.
A classic move by the Galactically Stupid.
The thing is, with all the start money, subsidised fuel etc etc...I wonder where the 40k would have gone if they had been successful......

They are also reporting on pretty much anything else that is going on - P1, Class One, X Cats etc, and they stop short of claiming any involvement, but I agree that to the uninitiated it could read they are involved in it all!

Yes, maybe my words of 'saying it's their event' was a step too far, but there is certainly a tone suggesting heavy involvement, as powerboating's saviours.

Surely this was just a Powerboat News story that UKOBA kindly put on their website I saw no mention of them claiming it was their event. Or did I miss something ??

If I remember rightly UKOBA said they wanted to create a website reporting on all offshore racing, as a sort of central info point, and although many of their members are very active as officials at various events, (Rory Power, Deb France, Bob Irwin, Terry Herring, etc),to my knowledge as a club they are not involved with the organisation of any events at the moment.
I'm sure somebody will correct me if I am wrong.....

I have tried on a number of times to send in reports and pics of our national races but got nowhere.
If you look at the 3C site on there it is a copy from Guernsey Worlds.

In those far off days of the 1980’s UKOBA was THE premier club and anyone who was involved with powerboat racing was a member so they had a huge membership running into thousands. With powerboat balls in the top hotels in London, their own full time race secretary and manager, their own powerboat (38ft Cougar) plus they owned property UKOBA was a powerhouse for the sport and would put on several races per year for ALL of the classes’ to take part in including Class 1 Class 11, Class 111c & 111d, Class 4 plus the Cruiser Classes fleet of some 16 boats alone. Imagine that many classes’ all running together as one fleet, which they did, and great fun it was too.
Of course the Godfather of our sport, Tim Powell, ran UKOBA with a steel hand and I used to go to the meetings in London and watch this man, only a couple of years older than me but light years ahead in intellect, handle the UKOBA committee with amazing and consummate ease. Tim Powell was the man. Also, don’t forget UKOBA, with Tim at the helm, ran the 1984 Round Britain Race.
They were amazing times and it was because there was what I can only call a mighty man at the helm. His sort isn’t around anymore unfortunately and that is why UKOBA are now at the point where they are a minute fraction of what they used to be and haven’t done anything for the sport for years.
