Homologation papers

I'm preparing a 28 Phantom for the Marathon race at Cowes, and the owner has been told that he needs the homologation paperwork for his Merc outboards, is this correct?

Yeh, I wouldn't have thought so either, but I am getting to the stage where nothing really suprises me.

That's only if the engines have been homologated by the UIM... If they are not used in any recognised offfshore class ie 3, there wont be any papers for them.

That's sort of how I see it, but in the current PB1 it says....

"Competitors racing in International Classes are further reminded that their engines MUST be homologated by the UIM and recorded on the UIM web site or official listing and the homologation number noted on the boats measurement certificate. Engines not listed on the UIM official list must not be used at International events. If a competitor wishes to apply for a new engine or model to be homologated for a particular class the following process must be adopted: Contact the RYA stating the make and model of the engine and racing class in which it is to be used."

So is Marathon an International class? Jonny Foreigner is competing at Cowes, and you need an International licence to enter, so now I'm not so sure.

Tony,

The way i see it ... Marathon is not an international class but.... Cowes is an International race as it has been made a 'UIM world championship'

This has lead to the UIM changing our rules as above & in lots of other areas... I am keen to see which of these rules now flush through to our club ran marathon races....

Anybody have a suggestion on the best way/who will be the point of clarity for these issues.... I have RB11 racers asking me lots of Q's & I don't have many answers at the mo .....

Dean

That's pretty much how I see it, so I'm hoping it's just badly written, much like a load of the other rules.

So many questions still need answering, we're a couple of races into the season, and still no definite answers!

Although I don't really want to get involved in this all over again it does need to be sorted, not only for this year but also for RB11. I have been talking to Rob Beakhust about certain irregularities in the Marathon rules to get some clarification.

There are only a handful of people who have a clear vision on Marathon rules (which have been seriously interfered with – by persons unknown), two are Annie and Rob Beakhust, another is John Fuller of course - John spent many months on the original Marathon rules draft which was submitted to the UIM last November and agreed with some modifications. Since then some things have changed.

May I suggest Dean/Tony that you talk to all of them to see the way forward. Then push it towards the Technical Working Committee (Barrie Williams) at the ORC for clarification/confirmation once perceived problems have been agreed and sorted. You do need to get going on this as the next ORC meeting is in a couple of weeks.
