Lifejacket Question (Offshore)
Anyone with access to the STC on my behalf. Dont have a copy of the exact for last year but could I use a Lifeline "Chute" lifejacket for offshore basic. It fits all the dots & crosses the T's in protection & bouyancy but no mention of chute in the PB Book that I have, would like it confirmed before spending a wedge load on one. Ta!

I think you may find that people who will make the decision dont know what you are talking about.

If you mean one of these, http://www.lifelinejackets.com/chute_jackets.cfm then I'd have thought they are more suited to drag racing, not really designed for offshore use. IMHO

A premature deployment at race speeds would make for some interesting video!

Yep that the URL to the one.
Obviously running a longer "ripcord" for offshore to account for movement within the seat. Running a smaller "Chute" just for deceleration, being as I would all be moving at the same speed as the ensuing wreck the small one would just give enough pull to seperate from those big heavy bits.
I hope to practice to avoid premature deployment as it get very messy & isn't funny

What Boat you Running?
Would mostly depend on what boat your running, most exits from a small mono will be below 60, and sideways after a hook - chute won't do much for you then.
Suspect a good - well padded around the ribcage jacket. My experience was the water didn't hurt, it is the contact with the hull on the way out and your navigator!
my top tip is to run a light navigator, break fewer ribs when they land on you in the boat, and that allows you to laugh about the whole thing a few weaks sooner

Navigator is the problem the way I see it, in that he would need to deploy slightly earlier to give a spacing on the exit. 70 round the cans normal jacket fine it was that oh.......... I'm going for it middle age moment when you loose all sense of fear & intelligence. The boat is more than capable of silly numbers & hence just in case the idea of knocking circa 40mph off the possible impact seems quite a good idea ( but sometimes I dont always have good ideas). Think it would work fine offfshore at the top of the envlope but its a multi-crew issue that would be more of a problem

How about steering and throttling from the rear seat, ala "I'm alright Jack".

Forget it! If you turn over or get "kicked out" of a raceboat, the last thing you need is a life jacket, helmet and overalls.
You need to know how to swim, and fast.
Having been in the situation on three occasions, I am unfortunately qualified to post this.

After a bit of fun, and going back to your original question - if it meets the minimum requirements in PB, then any extra features such as a chte should be a bonus hence I would not of thought they would matter if thats the way you want to go.....
This reminds me of the Dainese motorbike helmets that had an inflatable collar to protect your neck if you left the bike..... you would pull up at the pub, check the girls out, cock your leg over and get off - and just as you headed towards them ......pwoooosh!

Dat book of rules says you gotta have 2 SOB (Souls on Board)
single crew, 2.5 offshore class anybody !!!!!
(and before you say it yes the licence would cost double )
Edit: in answer to the PM's on top end I really dont know. Sistership which was slightly heavier with a 2.5 260 averaged 103 if I recall with a best one way of 1??.
Dont tell the Mrs - Shhhhhh!!!!

You need to talk to Mike King of the Safety & Technical Committee. He is in the middle of re-writing the lifejacket (racing vest) spec for the PB1 Rules.

Jacket arrived this morning more compact than I thought which is nice. Custom fit to allow for my belly tank - changes built in, Longer pull cord, extra eyelets for add on attachments, slightly higher chute mounting, to allow for higher backed seat. Very nicely made. Had a from STC on it.
I had been holding off on the thing for a bit & was thinking of a non-chute, but quite frankly that 90+ run with more to come soon brings home how vulnerable you can be and the need for a canopy. That mod is a non starter on the Midas would be too high on the C of G & so much work, next best thing I reckon is this, anything to improve the "oops" factor. Anything to separate from the big moving lump, aid feet first entry & in a perfect world knock of a few MPH before impact is good. Even if it only half works it's better than nowt.
Hope I never get to try it.
