The boats look like single engine with shafts drives.

M was the designated letter for the former UIM class 2, the class below class 1. That class is now defunct.
The class tried to morph into the Pro Vee class but that died as well.
Interestingly, the boat in the photo is now located in a corner of the Maritimo (Bill Barry Cotter ) yard on the Gold Coast, in Qld. Why or how it got there I don't know!

Yeah, later raced by Ken Thorne, rolled in torquay, and run over the infamous Portsmouth sub barrier at 100mph That wasn't a pretty sight.

I must admit I thought provee had a future, I really enjoyed watching them. I remember the yellow one that had the gas leakage in the canopy and narrowly missed a sail boat when the crew passed out. I think that was round the island race.

I had some interesting projects with Ken Thorne in the days before yellowfin... not suitable for posting here though...
Do you know if the SEARACERS made by Nicolini Offshore is also designed by Geir Arnestad? Looks very similar.

If it's the one I'm thinking of it missed the boat by -5ft and took the front of the sail boat off, no bad thing. I was doing safety that weekend and was helping out on a sinking boat when the call came over the radio that a yacht had been hit.
Don't think the crew passed out rather a little high on the exhaust fumes!

Correct. And the anchor on the front of the sail boat was less than friendly to the Cougar!

No, the speed limit stuff all started when Alan Priddy got in the way of the race boats in ' Spirit of Cardiff'. during a race out of Camber Dock (Portsmouth) in 2003

How did the M class or Pro V boats handle? Single 850 hp, narrow beam, 30ft.

AP had nosed up to a racing mark to get his passengers a "better look" - there were all sorts of classes racing together that day and if one of them had hooked slightly and gone inside the buoy they would have got run over - I gesticulated what I thought of his antics quite clearly at the time!
The upside down boat rolled right over and back upright again!

Yeah, but that is a RIB, which as we know, is a fundmentally dangerous concept. Those narrow single engine buzzi's like to bounce from tube to tube. You wouldn't see all that crap in a proper hard mono.
