3B world record was not by a 115 H.O
It was Douglas Matton with his red Twister with a Mercury Pro Xs.
The new world record is 135.32 km/h

this is not good news for the uk 3b as the uim will probably inforce canopys like they did in 3c which killed off 3c in the uk as they said the canopy rule was speed related.

Actually that is a point. I only mentioned this the other day. BUT maybe it will only be implied on cats?

Quite so Brian, however two things apply differently, I hope.
1. The speed was achieved in record run set up and not racing set up and most average offshore 3B speeds are not anywhere near that. So my argument would be that when most average racing speeds approach 80+, then would be the time. However there are many things that could be done before a class terminating rule like canopies in 3B was considered.
2. It would be more difficult to design and implement a 508 canopy for a two seat 20' boat and the increased height cog could make the boat more unstable, which defeats the safety objective.

Thanks Zander,
You are right and I stand to be corrected!
The Mercs did well in Uppsalla 3A and 3B as well I think.

One particular country thought they looked better as a fashion accessory with a canopy and that was that.....the rest had no chance despite sensible argument from one or two.

Out of interest .. are there any average speeds from the 2013 3B worlds / Europeans ? as i thought the cats were topping 80+ most of the time, admittedly speed dropped dramatically when out of the fjords in Norway which would affect the average but what about Uppsala ?

Average speeds 2013 were around 60 maybe 65 tops ! 2012 similar although these were particularly flat races.
2011 was possibly into the 50's at Torquay but that was a bit choppy.

I've requested the race details including lap and average speeds in 2013 of both the W3B in Tvedestrand and the C3B in Uppsala. Both first days were very flat and witnessed the fastest average speeds seen in 3B, especially Rasmus on day one in Norway. As soon as they arrive, I'll post them.

3B catamarans usally have a topspeed of around 65-66 knots in a race.
When I navigated Saltsjöloppet this summer we got passed really slowly by Matton. We did around 63-64 in our HotShot with a 150 Merc. Matton was abit faster but not much.
Some OT here
