[QUOTE=Jon Fuller;170393]That would be rather 'grey' I think, as these are not overbores/rebores, they are stock, and stock would appear to be too big.

I agree Jon,
That would be my interpretation of the rule.
Absolutely no point starting with an iffy 'open to interpretation' measurement.

Won't they allow some tollerence for OAP's after all your only making the numbers up

Does engines need to be CE marked to qualify as production engines?

a) Engines eligible for Marathon classes other than the classes A, B and C (all these are ‘free’) must be based on currently, or previously advertised/available mainstream production units (ie, Mercruiser, Volvo, OMC, Yanmar, Cummins, FPT etc) available to the general public through normal distribution channels with a minimum production run of 500 units.

Engines should be from the pleasure line, not the race line of engines from
any manufacturer, If the engine is listed with separate runner exhaust, as described in section (g), the motor is not acceptable. As an example, the Merc 525hp motor used in P1, has CMI headers with runner lengths greater than 6” long, so these motors would not be permissible. The old Merc 500 carb, had GILL/Merc alloy manifolds with common plenum, they would be acceptable, as would STD Merc 496HO’s, or 502efi’s.

b) The original bore & stroke must be retained, however, an allowance will be made for OEM piston oversize, i.e., +0.030.

c) Inlet system (intake manifold, intercooler, throttle body etc) MUST remain OEM; throttle bodies must retain OEM internal dimensions at butterfly.
Turbochargers must be OEM as specified as STD for motor to which it’s fitted.

d) Internal engine modifications are allowed, such as camshaft choice, cylinder head gas flowing etc, however, rules for OEM induction systems, intercoolers, turbochargers, etc will be strictly enforced.

e) Engine components may be compared to standard OEM components to establish eligibility.

f) Transom or side exhausts are permitted, providing that the total volume of water passing through the engine cooling system mixes with the exhaust gases from the manifold.

I can't imagine why they'd need to be. A motor can be available to the general public without being CE approved, just wouldn't be allowed to be used in the leisure market.

Gazza,
I have to finish the plugwork for hull and deck , build tooling , build a boat , test, work it up into a usable boat , make the inevitable mods to the build spec. and then calculate the costs . To answer your question all I can say at this stage is .........Competitive ! :
I will know more in the early part of next year.

You guys on Boatmad will be the first to hear of progress!!

I am very dissapointed that you have got Mike Lloyd back in to the "racing mode".

I expected that when he stood down from the "saviour of our sport ", he would retire, play golf and write his second book.

Do I have to wait for another few years to see what happens to Frank?

This is "our impression" and it is just an impression, of how the Ring 34 will look. Apologies to everyone in advance at the minimalistic drawing but that's my fault for not being good at drawing, long time since my school Technical Drawing day’s!!. More later.

Some more data

You mention that Swipewipes all up wt was 3000kg Jon,I take it that`s full load and no crew, well now the master draughtsman has done his thing I took the block vol of the 34ft (loa X beam x mean depth) and put it on one of my curves for GRP racers, based on the Avenger 34,Abo,Miss Embassy. It indicated 770kg for hull and deck.Putting that into a 2 x 315hp Yanmar craft came out at 3200kg full load, and this in turn equated to 63mph half load or race average, which compared to the SCR average for Hot Lemon (58.6mph) seemed in line, being as it should be a lot lighter than the scorpion.I wonder if you ever weighed Swipewipes in it`s raw state.Just playing with numbers again.

No, Leviathan is 3100kg's

Swipes is 2600kg's all up, no crew, minimal fuel.

We reckoned the bare hull & deck was probably about 1000kg going by materials used.

We would have liked to have weighed the bare boat, but back in June 2008, we were fairly busy working round the clock just to get it to Portsmouth for the 21st, so the luxury of weighing it never happened. our figure of 2600 kg is from a dodgy crane load cell!

We think our engines currently make about 260 crankshaft hp (x2) (so probably 235-240 at the prop) and it does an honest 62mph.

We're hoping to get the newer 295's for next season, so they might be an honest 280? we'll have to wait n see. Would be nice to see 65+

[QUOTE=Ciao;170544]I am very dissapointed that you have got Mike Lloyd back in to the "racing mode".

My Dear Ciao,
Please accept my sincere apologies for enticing Mr Lloyd back into powerboating when he so deservedly should take it easy and retire gracefully to his tomato patch.

We were discussing retirement (as folk of advancing years are wont to do) and came to the conclusion that there was not much for the Aged to occupy their minds with ,being as we are, not quite into the dribbling stage just yet.

The options open to us are Bowls, Bridge and Beetle drives or maybe a little gentle Boating (power). So we chose the latter as we considered that we were not up to handling the stress and excitement of the former.
We intend to Pootle around the course and hopefully not be of hindrance to others and get in anybodys way.
We fully realise that we are making up the numbers and thank you all for being so understanding and showing absolutely no signs of being ageist .

We are also fully aware that our decrepit frames will probably not be able to cash the cheques that we have written and thank you for your heartfelt concern, you are altogether too kind.

Mike is approaching Saga holidays , Sanatogen, and Werthers with a view to sponsorship for a couple of cadavers to race a boat, ( and even a private hospital for discounted intensive care at the conclusion of each round.)

We promise to keep out of the way of you youngsters, please have a care when overtaking the elderly and watch out for flying appliances ie. crutches, rolls of elastic bandage , liniment etc that may be thrown inadvertantly from the boat. Navigation for you will be enhanced and made easy , use your sense of smell and follow the trail of TCP.

Peace be with you My Children and no squabbling over engine capacities........

Mike
