Ok,

I may be mad, but I have had my boat messed with before a race, and yes, I know that no-one would *ever* do such a thing to another racer, but ....

Apart from the CCTV and alarms for my boat, I have found a new 'device' for Torquay. As we have to leave the boat 100's of meters from the truck, and at the mercy of late night 'Performance Balancing Manipulation Specialists' AKA unsporting fat bastids that cant drive to save their asses so they fiddle with compeditors boats to equalise the field. ( and yes, I know this *never* happens...)

This new toy is a video recorder, with a tiny tube, for looking inside engines and things like that. You can lock it in place inside the boat, and the extended tube can record the goings on outside the boat, especially the people stuffing chewing gum up your water inlet hole in the leg!

So, I have ( hopefully ) locked the petrol cap to prevent 'ingress' of water through the filler cap, locked the engine hatch with a padlock to prevent my spark plug leads from falling out, alarmed the cabin so that some fat yellow bastid cant mess with my electronics and mapping and now a camera to record my outdrive so that some chewing gum cant find its way into my water inlet hole again...

Soo? What else is left? Drilling holes into the hull?

'Performance Balancing' is such a nice term.

We all know it *never* happens in the sport of course.

Out of interest, I spoke to my local Police for advice on this, and they actually took it very seriously. In their opinion, 'Performance Balancing' someone elses high performance boat, prior to a race would be dealt with as attempted murder!

Gosh - Attempted Murder means they pull out all the stops, full crime sceen techies etc. They figure this from Motor Racing, where a failed component could cause a death, and if the component failed due to 'Performance Balancing' by a competitor, the charge will be attempted murder.

If all else fails of course, and the 'Performance Balancing' can be proved to not be capable of causing injury, then they will just go for good old Criminal Damage.

The end result is a criminal record - no matter what. But what was interesting is that you would not have to drag the Police out to investigate, they will take it seriously and come out on their own - as it would be seen as an attempted murder case.

Pleased to hear that.

'Performance Balancing' appears to loose some of its shine with that information..

I wonder if the RYA would ever let you race again if you were charged with the attempted murder of a competitor due to 'Performance Balancing' his boat prior to a race?

Yeah, when you think about it how far removed is it from tampering with the brakes or steering on someones car, not very!!!

Yes it was very nice of someone to make the performance enhancements to my gear box seals on the Bernico.

Just for the record it was Windermere not Cardiff.

Funny thing Jealously!!!

Had to tow the boat all the way back then having only raced on the Saturday.

Would of loved to have caught them doing it :-)

It really is disgraceful behaviour. It's not confined to boats either, we were on the way to a rally and stopped at a service station to fill the jerry cans and get a bacon butty from the shop, left van car and trailer on the forecourt and all went inside. Waiting for the food the lad on the till says "there's someone messing about with your car" and it was another competitor helping out by adding a bit diesel to the car's tank! The tank is in the boot, so he'd had to undo the clips to get in, toerag, oh and for good measure he undid the valves in the two spare tyres that were in the boot as well.

Got the reg of his van on the cctv, but the organisers seemed to think it was just a bit high spirited fun!

I think anyone caught should be banned for good.

I would like to hear the RYA's take on this actually.

I personally would fund a criminal damage case by private prosecution if the CPS dropped the case, and I would also publish the case as wide as possible, with all evidence.

Just thinking about power turning into a bad wave at the moment the water 'high spirit fun' added to my tank hits the engine.....

Tricky, I have just got back and read your aligations and they are preposterous. The guy you are slagging has been around powerboating for many years and is one of the nicest blokes around. You on the other hand have just arrived and caused more crap in your first year than anyone else. Learn to drive your boat in a manner which fits our sport then start accusing. I know how you feel about me, but IMHO you couldn't drive a sharp stick up your own arse! If you want to talk about this I will be Torquay on Thursday afternoon, on my own. Hope to see you there.
