Offshore Racing Down Under

For those who are interested, below is a link to the web site for the Offshore Superboat Championships Australia, as the series is now called here.

The season has just completed, with another championship to the Maritimo team of Tom Barry-Cotter and Pal Virik-Nilson, running under the Mustang name (a boat manufacturer here just bought by Bill Barry-Cotter).

There were 5 Class 1 boats and five Superboat "Lite" boats (running the standard 525 Mercruisers) so the Championships are looking pretty healthy. The Qatar team, including Sheik Hassan and Steve Curtis, ran a few races in a boat provided by Martimo.

I was in N Ireland with Derek Basham in OCR at the same time as that - the Victory team had everything including their own fuel!

Indeed it is. It's a lttle long in the tooth now but has been running very reliably with 525 Mercruisers for the last few seasons.

The team has sold the boat and is reported to have acquired the 36' Victory hull, which won the Class 2 championships a few years ago powered by BMW engines (apparently). I don't have any information about this hull. Any photos Little Nige or FF?

You need to run canopied boats here but no rules about separate cockpits. Having said that, Team 3 is the only boat running that set up.

I believe the crew is OK. The boat however is a different story. That's the second big crash in 2 years for that hull so the Bat Boat isn't exactly catching on here! It looks very flighty at speed...

No photo as such, but just this clipping.I think they ran in 2001-2002.

Without checking what I have on film of them, they probably won their middle east championships.

This boat is also ex Victory. It won the 1995 or 1996 (can't remember which) world championships. The original deck was replaced a few years ago.

As is this one, which Bill Barry Cotter bought to replace the Maritimo hull he flipped over in Austria few years ago, run for Sheik Hassan and Steve Curtis.
