Old Times & New.

Seeing this video recently on YouTube got me thinking. Are the current range of Marathon boats faster or slower than those twenty years ago because yes I know these are cats but even some of the monos are moving a bit quick. Wonder what the times were compared to today. Someone will know. And hey, they were racing in the Solent!!

Brilliant footage the close ups were great.

Also loved the lack of crap music that gets chucked onto a video these days. So much better to her the engines screaming.

Great footage, I still think cats should run in Marathon, even in a separate class.

Why is marathon so cataphobic?

SO agree - some truly juicy noises in there and so much better to get the 'whole' atmosphere through the ambient sound; amazingly clear footage too and what a joy to see and know it was on my home waters - great vid' !

Fantastic! Reporter was just awesome. Possibly my fave raceboat ever and at with steve on the throttles - what a combo!

Surely those old class 1 boats were way quicker than the vast majority of the marathon fleet. 100mph Plus, no? Didn't some run way over 2000hp

It's such a shame most of these boats are a thing of the past! Watching that was almost like watching video of an extinct species.
I know the world is a changing place striving to be safer etc etc but I can't help but wonder if it's all headingin the wrong direction! What I'd gove to have these monsters hurtling around Guernsey again, that noise is incredible!

Tradition I'm afraid. Started with the 2008 Round Britain Race which I wanted to be mono only bearing in mind what happened to cats in the 1984 Round Britain Race (they sank and broke up) and it developed into Marathon Class. It's not all bad, new monos are being built as you saw in this years CTC and they are all looking great. There will be some fantastic monos coming out for the Cowes/Monte-Carlo, some triple and quad engined.

audio on part 4??

Absolutely great videos. Very interesting for those of us not following the sport at that time. Many thanks Nige.
Any chance of getting the audio on part 4 authorised?
All the best
Jonathan

National (RYA) rules for Marathon were drawn up by Mike Lloyd, Jon Fuller & Fabio Buzzi.

Catamarans were deemed to be un safe for the purpose of Marathon Racing.

Buzzi saw Stefano Casiraghi lose his life in one of his Catamarans, and never built one again.

For Information - The UIM changed the rules drafted by Lloyd, Fuller & Buzzi to include multi hulls - at the discretion of the race organiser.

Hi Jonathan, I originally uploaded part 4 with the full audio but the powers that be snuffed out the soundtrack, possibly because it included a Level 42 track!! (the programme producers included it - not me). I recently wrote to Mark King from Level 42 who replied he had no problem with the track being used, but also advised that the music publishers (Polydor) might be the ones who are objecting - so I am in the throes of contacting them to try and obtain permission - I hope it's reinstated because the soundtrack is great, especially as the green flag is dropped. Watch this space. And by the way the footage from the earlier clip was the unedited TVS (now Meridian) footage taken from a chopper - I know someone who used to work there. It's not what you know.......!

Tv

Thanks for the reply Nige, I hope it comes off. Of all the brilliant videos on the Boatmad gallery it is the ones from the TV companies that add that little bit extra by way of background and history.
Are there any more in the TVS/Meridian cupboard?
cheers

'fraid not Jonathan - the Brighton Marina footage on my youtube page was also TVS, but no more unedited footage. Kind of makes you realise what a great source of material the tv companies are/were/could have been! I've lots more tapes to go through (edited) and will upload more as and when I get the time - I now appreciate just how much time it does take to upload files that are many 100's of megebytes in size - and my upload speed living on the side of a mountain is not exactly cutting edge..............!
