P1 Powerboat World Championship
From the Maltese Sunday Times
P1 Powerboat World Championship
Sony, Offshore Performance win as Chaudron places fifth
Maltese motorsport enthusiasts yesterday witnessed the excitement of Powerboat racing as the opening round of the 2005 UIM P1 World Championship was held on the circuit between the Grand Harbour and Portomaso.
The gusty winds that blew across the islands forced organisers to change the sequence of races, with the Rally Race, which was to take place today, being held yesterday. The Endurance Race and the circumnavigation of the island were put back to this afternoon at 3.
Fifteen teams competing in the Evolution and SuperSport classes took to the choppy seas off the Sliema coastline to bag their first points of the season.
Italian team Sony gave a stern warning to their rivals in the high-power Evolution class as they stormed to victory ahead of compatriots Fain Plast and 2004 champions Thuraya.
In the Supersport division, the honours went to debutant team Offshore Performance of Switzerland who crossed the finish line first ahead of Italian duo Jolly Drive and Datch.
Malta's entry in this division, Chaudron Team, of Aaron Ciantar and his sister Audrien, placed fifth overall.
Today they will be looking to achieve a better result in the Endurance Race which will consist of a multi-lap circuit from Sliema coast up to the Madliena Tower. On completion of the course, all teams will speed off to circumnavigate the island in an anti-clockwise circuit, powering to the finish line outside Portomaso.
Their main objective will be to try and break the speed record set by Thuraya last year of 42 minutes 50 seconds.
Yesterday's results...
Evolution class - 1. Sony; 2. Fain Plast; 3. Thuraya; 4. OSG; 5. Cantieri del Mediterraneo. DNS - Wettpunkt.com
SuperSport class - 1. Offshore Performance; 2. Jolly Drive; 3. Datch; 4. Oba Oba Racing; 5. Chaudron; 6. Pietro Pellegrini Allufer; 7. Buzzi Bullet.

Now that's real racing! I raced one of those CUVs in the Guernsey Worlds, whenever that was,(1989?), called Paul Picot belonging to the Spelta family and they were incredible in the rough with a pair of Isotta Fraschini V6 650HP diesels. Very hard ride that nearly crippled you at the end of the race ! Had two seconds behind "Cheat to win" Fabio in the tripple engine Seatek boat and a retirement as the throttleman hurt his back, finished fourth overall. I think that was the time that Franco Statua was spat out of Miura, (another CUV, bright red, but with Lambos), they stuffed it and spun out about 100 yds away from us on the way to the Gulliot Passage, he swam back to the boat and they carried on!
That boat pictured could easily have been late 70's as the first Alitalia CUVs were in 1977- they don't make them how they used to !!

That is a wicked class! If in a position to race again, I would definitely want to be doing that series. As you say, real racing.

Just heard from a friend in Italy that the legendary Franco Statua passed away last Monday in Viareggio, aged 77. R.I.P
