Proposed Event - 30 May 2009

It is the intention of the V24 Club to run a long distance powerboat race or other event on the 30th & 31st May 2009.

This event will retain as much of the sprit and challenge (and course) of the event first planned for the date as possible.

Further information will be posted in the next few days.

The V24 club has stepped in to try a resolve & progress the Poole-Cherbourg-Poole event, it’s a difficult task but not impossible, it will take a good effort but can be completed.

What’s important here is to give you all an idea of the direction & for you the competitors to feedback and offer some commitment.

The basic outline to date is to retain the same dates, Cross to Cherbourg as a time trial or an out and out race, stop for refuel ect maybe overnight yet TBD. After arrival and signoff you are free to return home or join the run back the following day- not as a race - but in a group or as you wish. In the event of foul weather a shorter UK alternate course would be available circa the 100 - 130 nm range. If it’s impossible to secure Cherbourg a possible alternate is Southampton - Deauville, it is a much longer run but could be a viable alternative. Southampton and Deauville are more receptive to the idea of the event.

Cost is a factor these days - so this will be a no frills, no bells, no whistles event. It will be or could be whatever you make of it. We do not intend to arrange launching facilities - each craft can make their own arrangements, we will provide a list of local options. This will help return a good saving in entry fees.

So feedback - it’s an open forum but time is of the essence and the clock is ticking, if it’s going to take place we need to move so no long drawn out debate keep it short & sweet. As a club we will try to accommodate as best as possible. What we really need is a roll call of who will race. A show of hands is fine now but once things start to progress we will need to ask for a non refundable deposit to help cover some of what’s involved circa £50. We will make this a fully transparent event for accounting purposes & is a non profit venture for the V24 Club.

To make it work we will need a minimum of 15 entries. If that number of entries is not forthcoming by the cut-off day ( the date we have to submit the fees to the RYA ) then the event will not run, plain & simple - the ball is very much in the racers court.

All classes & type of boat will be accommodated IAW with the published RYA document (LDOEW&NRBOOK) Feb 2007

Open to all hull types.

The Race Committee, Club and Organisers do not reserve the right to refuse any entry which they consider not suitable for the race, is in violation of any rule or is likely to bring the sport into disrepute. They will leave the determination of such aspects in the hands of the RYA. Craft that are demed by the scrutineers as unsafe or those which can not make the distance will not be allowed to start the race.

The Race Committee, Club and Organisers feel they are under an obligation to explain their reasons for any actions at any time.

News Update:

Sorry for the delay, it was much more difficult than I imagined.

The Poole Cowes Poole event is completely unlikely to take place - there is a strong resistance for this from the French authorities. They are pissed about something, and the deadline for submitting approvals is next week Friday - So I am going to abandon this event.

I have decided in place of the Poole event to setup a Southampton to Deauville race.

Deauville is approximately 5 miles South West of Le Havre. This is a race in excess of 115 miles accross the channel.

I have today submitted the Déclaration de manifestation maritime to Direction des Affaires Maritimes du Calvados for approval. They require notification 60 days before any event.

I have a meeting with the harbours masters of the Solent to get some guidance from them on the start of the race in the Solent.

I have three confirmed entries to 'whatever you put on'. This is great, but just the RYA event fees alone will be circa £730. What I will do tomorrow is post an invitation for entry, and then ask that those who would like to enter to fill in the form and add a cheque for £50, and send this to me as a deposit.

This cheque for £50 will be returned if we do not proceed with the event. - The decision to run the event or not will be made on Friday the 27th March 2009, as the fee and race instructions/course need to be submitted to the RYA on Monday the 30th March 2009. If nine deposits with the 'intend to enter' forms are not received by the Friday, then we will not proceed with the event.

I anticipate that the final entry fee will be in the region of £200 per boat. This will NOT include launching or overnight berth at Deauville. This will only cover the actual cost of the race event ( RYA licence fees, officials fees, Notice to mariners fees etc. ).

If additional boats enter then the cost of the event will be reduced, and the entry fee will be adjusted accordingly. This will be run as a true beneficium totus event with no gain being made from the entrants fees.

I know things are tough out there, but I do hope for the sake of the sport those putting so much effort into getting the racing going either around the cans or from point to point get all the support they deserve for their drive and enthusiasm

I know Barry said he's out of all but the CTC but it would be great if he and others could do the other events organised cash ( the biggest problem of all ) permitting of course

The French Agree....

I have the confirmation from the French that the event can take place. The harbour masters, Motonautiqe Association and Coastguard equivalent are all now happy for the event.

Boats can also overnight in Deauville harbour at a reduced mooring fee, or return to the UK after signing off from the race.

It is also looking like it is going to be possible to revive the Poole-Cherbourge Poole event, and I have a meeting in France on the 15th april to discuss this further. This will obviously not take place on the original date, but we can look to a race or time trial in the future - probably still this year - possibly in June or July.

So that is jolly good news all round!

Non - event...

Unfortunately, due to the almost total lack of responce, we are not going to hold this event.

As we have formed a working relationship with the French Authorities, we will be looking to running a BASIC Poole Cherbourg Poole event towards the end of the year, and if there is a Marithon series running in 2010, we will run a Southampton Deauville event in 2010 as part of the Marithon National Series.
