Puting On A Race

How hard can it be to Organise a race?
How hard can it be to organise a race?
It’s hardly rocket science
Take over a car park, lay a few buoys
Then let the games commence!
For those of you who sit at home
Surfing the ‘boaty’ sites
I’m going to explain as much as I can
And put this wrong to right
The RYA wants your venue calendar booked
At least six months before
But you’ll need permission from the local Harbour Master and Council
Before your foot steps through the door
Produce your race instructions, course, risk assessment and approval
Submit to the authorities
Make sure it’s a minimum of thirty days prior to event
Just to add to your anxieties
Notify the Coastguard, Hospital and Police
And of course the Fire Brigade
Find a club for briefings and prize giving
And don’t forget to book a crane.
Locate a car park for the pits and seek approval for use
Book a room for race control
Arrange somewhere with a view for the time keepers
And where Safety can keep an eye on them all
Seek officials, marshals and scrutineers
Find them all a bed for the night
Source local divers, medics and safety crews
Even though the budget’s tight
Contact the press, radio and TV
To try and advertise our race
Desperately seek out some sponsorship
As they try not to laugh in your face
Apply to Ofcom for a radio licence
Order trophies and cheap champagne
We still as yet don’t know who will come
It’s just a waiting game

Send out race instructions and entry forms
To all our ‘faithful’ crews
Plus send them to the web site ’racers’
Who brag on line that they’ll never lose
The race weekend arrives and if you look around
Even those of you who’ve been racing for years
Take note of those few running around for you
They’re the same old volunteers!
Fire Extinguishers and signs placed around the pits
Ropes measured, Buoys inflated, punctures repaired
Course laid out according to plan
Packs of flags prepared
So much goes on behind the scenes
So you can take part in this sport
So take some time to think of those helpers
And give them your support
Don’t complain that the trophies are shite
Or that the pits don’t have a shower
We’re doing the best we can on a shoestring
And everything within our power
It’s true without racers there wouldn’t be an event
And it’s fantastic to watch you out there
But the same applies to the safety boats
And all the helpers that care
Everything that has to be paid for
Comes out of your entry fees
So to make sure all this hard work isn’t in vain
You just need to turn up, please!

So do me a favour, next time you hear someone say
It’s easy to organise a race
Just point me in their direction
And I’ll punch them in the face!

The above was a little ditty composed by Pat, in response to a few moans in recent times. No names no pack drill.

I haven’t raced for many years things have come a long way during my sabbatical but it's a lot of hard graft for pretty much no reward - It is a regular core – Heck - Good Old Chris Reed was there & he is still around today - be nice to see him this weekend. (That’s over 20 years). He is not the only one there are many others thatput in many years.
Why people do it - enthusiasm & passion for powerboats and it has to be a passion as interest wouldn’t cut it as far as the work load goes.

AND THEN !!

You have to pack it all away again transport and store all the equipment, clean it and check it all ready for next time.

Someone then mysteriously fills in all the paperwork, reports and returns for the RYA so that we can pay most of the income to them for allowing us to do it in the first place.

Health&Safety

I'm new to the boat scene but have been involved with organising Moto X and Autograss racing and one item missing from your list is dealing with the Local Authority H&S when a minor accident happens that they blow all out of proportion and put the blame neatly back in the organiser lap even though its probably some kid being an idiot.I'm hoping to race more in the future so thank you in advance to those that put so much effort in for so little reward.Nic

Putting on a Race

Well done Pat!
As ever a lot of effort for little or no reward!

Have a great weekend in Torquay, sorry I can't make it this time.

Having been involved for 30 years, I know exactly how Pat & Bob feel.
Whether it's 50 raceboats or 10, the hard work and anxt is the same nightmare for every organiser! Well done to all who still give it a go!
