Doesn't actualy look like it did much burning! you're lucky, it must have blown itself out.

Could always be worse I suppose.

A number of the compartments remained of fire after the bang, but fortunately our potassium powder fire extinguishers worked well, and along with a relatively rapid submersion this meant the fire damage was only superficial, with just the internal resin coating being damaged.

Looks like Chris's on-board hairdryer hose is a little worse for wear! How's he gonna do his hair(s) now?

We believe we may have developed a small leak in one of the fuel tanks, which are mounted low down in either sponson. In the last photo you can see the remains of a bilge pump, which probably caused the spark that caused the bang. We think it only took a tiny amount of fuel to cause the vapour build up within the sealed internal areas of the hull.

Fortunately our canopy is a one piece carbon/kevlar safety cell, which kept the flash away from us.

We are currently removing the fuel tanks for inspection, and will be changing the bilge pumps to manual ones so that we will no longer have any electrical components that could cause the same to happen again.

I'm more than happy to host event photos on the media site for people - full credit will of course be given and the photos would be watermarked, and can even set up a shopping cart for people to buy pics.

Would have been nice if the rescue diver was in the water before reversing away.

Hi Guys

Can't remember what thread but there was a thread on here a little while ago asking why you should wear fire proof overals in race boats.

Well i think the guys in C12 will tell you that when a boat is on fire it is not funny and you need all the protection you can get.

After looking at the pics of C12 after the incident i can see why it's going to take a while to sort it.

Good luck with it and hope to see you back on the water soon

Divers dont like to get wet. Fact. They like to dress up in the kit and look good, but hate getting into the wet stuff, especially when its cold.

When we had the Bladerunner with the diver on board, he was briefed to get into the water immediately on arrival ( like the OSPRAY guys do ) and do a visual inspection of the contents of the canopy, and ensure both occupants are happy and safe, and stay down there till both occupants are on the surface - the diver being the last to come up.

Additional things the diver can do is to try close the escape hatches before towing starts and assist in the recovery of the racers themselves.

What we will have to do for future races is have a representitive from V24 and C Class ( or the V24 rep can go on behalf of the C Class ) go to the safety briefings at the race events, to check the divers are there, they know what is going on, and what is expected of them.

Actually, that is a very good idea.

At least both crews and divers would know what is expected from each.

I also think the divers ( and I know some do) should make themselves familiar with the doors / hatches on every canopied boat at the event. Every time, in case mods have been made in between events.

Just a thought...

Somehow I can't see you two having a "After you" "No, after you" conversation.....or even "Would you pass the fire extinguisher, we seem to have a small conflagration"
