Motor Boat Magazine

The magazine Motor Boat is doing our sport proud, last month it was a great account of the 2007 Drivers Wharf Poker run and this month another article on the 2008 Round Britain Powerboat Race. MB Page 14. Hugo's editorial about the 2008 Round Britain Race is simply fantastic. At last someone is recognising what we are all trying to achieve which is great for the sport. You also want to read Brian Peters account of the race in 1969 on the back page, that will show you how rough this race can be. Ocean Dragon Racing get some great free publicity.

I love the way he has laid down the challenge to the Boat Manufacturers. It's about time. Now let's see what they are made of!

Hugo is an editor who treats his job with professionalism and knowledge. Unlike that nobster Simon Collis Editor of Motor Boats Monthly who has been given the same info and chosen to do nothing with it. In fact his magazine now seems to publish more appologies each month to the people and organisations he upsets every time he puts pen to paper.

why

why 5 months ago are you told your racing s1 to then find your a rib ,to then find you grown 3 ft ,because rules have been set by so-called knowledgeable experts who talk about it but have no intention of doing it.

My personal opinion is, I think the original anouncment of th race, and publicising of the 'intended' rules at the same time, was a mistake. The rules should have been publicised only when they were set, even if this meant holding fire on the annnouncment of the race, But that isn't how it happened and for many, many reasons, the latest and hopefully now pretty much 'set in stone' rules are going to work well, and, make it as fair a race as possible, in as simple a way as is possible.

All the rules that were posted originally were accompanied by info stating they were 'Intended rules', that means they might change. Maybe building an entire boat on those rules, hoping they wouldn't change, was just a tad niave!

I would add that, with a race like this, and with current restrictions imposed by the authorities etc, writing a set of rules to please all, is nigh-on impossible, at least it is without having 30 class's, and that would be a nightmare in itself and wasn't going to happen.

Put simply, you cant please ALL of the people ALL of the time.

As for non-competitors making the rules, do you REALLY think having someone who you're going to be racing against, writing the rules YOU have to work by would be a good idea? You obviously never raced against Dredge or Pussyfoot.

The Flipper fits, and would be perfectly competitive in, RB3! If you don't think you have what it takes to do the neccessary job, it probably isn't a race you should enter anyway.

The rules are there to try and make it fair for all, not to give a handfull of people an unfair advantage.

Would you care to elaborate on that?

Everyone would like to enter a class that only they can win! But that's not racing.

what class were you originally going to enter, and win?

What makes you think there isn't a class now, that at least in theory, you could win?

Where exactly have the goal posts moved that has caused you to go from a potential winner, to someone who wants stay at home?

And lastly, that's an awfull lorra money! where's it all gone!!

For what it's worth, If I was going to enter RB4, a Phantom 28 with Twin 2.5 litre OBs would probably be my first choice! I think that formula has the 'potential' to be dominant in that class.
Of course, wining a 2000 mile powerboat race takes more than just a boat model and outboard engine capacity choice, that's the easy bit! It has to be extremely reliable, fuel efficient, well driven and maintained meticulously. But all of those things need to be just perfect, whatever class you find yourself in.

Who told you the rule changes have ruined your chances of a pot?????...the same person who told you there were only 6 genuine P28s?

Very interesting but no it's not me. How on earth did that rumour start? Would like to take part but will be too busy handling the guys taking part! Might sneak a ride on a leg somewhere though.

Its not actually a rumour until i make it one!!!

I was talking to a man who knows a man who knows a man. He said that he could put me in touch with a man who has just bought John Burdens old Revenger 25SC and is actively involved with RB2008!!

I put 2 + 2 together, make five and have a stab in the dark. (I seem to remember you saying youd like one for the Race).

So its not you Mike, sorry my appologies. I wonder who it is then?

Well it's a mystery to me. I thought I would have heard from anyone on my team who would have done that unless of course it's, no, it's not possible, surely!
