Rule Change/Helmets/Event License
I've just noticed that it appears open face helmets are no longer allowed. Also you can only have two Event Licenses in one season.I'm not sure if this has been on Boatmad before but thought it was worth a mention instead of turning up at your first race to find out.Regards Nic

As much as I'm against the current crop of rule changes, I don't think you can complain about anything related to safety. I really can't understand why open face were ever allowed in an open boat.
As for only 2 event licences, what's the problem, there's only that many races this season!!!!!

I wasn't complaining(I allways use Full Face-I have to protect my good looks)but lots don't-I'm not sure if canopied boats need full face ?could be a bit claustrophobic.Event Licenses can be used for other than Basic races admitably not many Basic's this year.
I just noticed the helmet rule in the race instructions for the Cancer

Youd also have severe problems getting the dv in your gob with a full face helmet

New Rules
it says in the new rules F28 unless otherwise stated at the briefing Full Face helmets must be worn at any time when the boat is on the plane...........is that not a bit late to confirm requirements ?

nic your entering ocr now i believe , i've come to the conclusion that it wouldn't be normal without last minute changes and confusion ! Lol ( joking before anyone lays into me ! ) don't think i'd want my pretty face hitting the dashboard of the 19 in an open helmet though !

If anyone was in looe last year when my mate and his dad had open faced helmets?
IMVHO fulll face helmets all the way makes sense if you are facing forwards.

You all need to come to guernsey hen if you're worried about there not being many basics this year, we've still got at least another 4 or 5 left to go, possibly more, all in the best powerboting waters in the UK!
Ok so the boat ain't cheap, but if a group wanted to come across I'm sure we could sort something there, and you get a free holiday to boot!
I'll even let you come and poke fun at the revenger if it clinches the deal!
James

Hi - Anybody racing in an 'open' boat -
Suggest try waterskiing in a full face - after a hard fall you might change your opinion. A broken jaw is more better than drowning.

Or bollock naked, but then that's not what we're discussing!

Hi Tony
BLX to your sexist comment!
Point trying to make is that if you end up in the water it can be difficult to get air rather than oggin around your nostrils, especially, as often happens after a severe roll, you are 'winded'.
Another factor is the volume (cubage) of full face helmets is usually greater than the open face variety and that can lead to potential neck pain/breakage if cartwheeling across the water before slowing and sinking.

Sadly, having rolled over a couple of race boats at speed -
I would suggest the full face helmet is akin to having ones head dunked in a bath of water -
without the security of knowing you are in the bathroom.

I assume (and with the current rulebook I appreciate that is seriously dodgy) that this helmet rule doesn't apply to boats with roofs?

My guess is the only exemption will be with harnesses in an enclosed reinforced cell !!

You are correct, Cookee. JP has been advised and is in the process of amending this for canopied boats.

Personally, I would never get in an open boat wearing an open face helmet, but thats just me....and I've been chucked out twice, and not had breathing difficulties as a result of the helmet....
Nice thick visor, and small aperture.
Much better in a stuff or 6 as well...(Every lap at Ilfracombe, thanx Scotty)
But I would defend individual choice, as in most things.
