Bloody great!!
Just noticed that no ski racing in Plymouth this year!!
In a port where we always have water why cant we have a decent event like they do in Weston?
If anyone from the local ski club is on this forum could they answer that?
Or are we only interested in a quick ski up the embankment???
You only get out what you put in!

Is there a ski club in Plymouth ??
When the Europeans were in Plymouth in 2003, they were organised in the main by Exmouth and Lyme Regis I think.

Yeh. I see what your saying Nige about basically going where the support is but for christ sake if we cant organise a decent event down here then theres something wrong. Any event wil only be as good as its advertised.
Are the power grand prix still going this year?
We have great facilities here its just a shame that they are not pushed a bit more. !

I totally agree with you, we should really go where we will be seen by the general public in order to gain more interest. More interest = potentially more money for the sport!

Not sure about the power boat grand prix this year, havent heard.

Richard Kirk's from Plymouth I believe. He races FII

Last year there was also a Grand prix series sponsored by Bartercard where over the weekend they had OCR & skiing. I thought this worked quite well but I havent heard wether this is going to be the cae again this year?

I believe that the Barter Card deal went to the wall last year hence no input this year.

As to putting on races in Plymouth, nothing stopping you putting together an organising committee and applying for a race you don’t need much.

Somewhere to be based for signing in toilets showers and changing facilities a sponsor would be very nice as you will need some money for the prize giving federation fess, doctor, ambulance rescue boats, officials, judges, timekeepers, scrutinisers, people to sign in the competitors, accommodation and travelling expenses for some officials.

Then you will need help and lots of it all unpaid, radio comms, parking for campers cars oh and for boats, launch vehicles, reliable, launch crews, medic on the water, diver just in case, public address system, commentator, not forgetting insurance.

The backing of the local council and police would help.

I raced for many years and historically we raced at well established ski clubs not always in a town or holiday resort, places like Allhalows, Varne, Seasalter Whitstable, Weston, Lyme Regis, Loch Earn, Hartlepool, Chasewater, Penarth and Hunstanton to name just a few.
Why did we race at these venues, mainly because they had the facilities in place and all of the support infrastructure and club funds to subsidise the events.

Unfortunately the Ski Federation doesn’t provide enough support to put on races at some of the more attractive venues it is mainly left up to a few dedicated clubs and members that are scattered around the country, again mainly at well establish clubs.
If you want racing in Plymouth, very good venue, start a club and get your application in.

This discussion about going to better venues has been going round for many years now, on the face of it the Barter card deal appeared to go some way to achieving it but it appears to have fallen early on.

dbe1,
So does that mean that the mixed racing (OCR & skiing)grand prix weekends are finished?
As for starting a club Plymouth has one already, I`ll drop them a mail to find out the state of play as far as applying for races. Fair point about facilities although this is not an issue in Plymouth.

As far as I am aware Barter Card are out of the picture and the link with OCR, I will be seeing one of the Ski racing technical committee members over the weekend I will find out the situation.

I raced at Plymouth many years ago, twice if I remember correctly both times out of Queen Anne's Battery Marina, forgive me if name is not quite right, good facilities.

Race was as a rough as a bears arse, out leg filled the boat with water, in leg spent most of the time emptying it, went on lap after lap for an hour, then the same in the support race.

Is the club in Plymouth a member of the BWSF, needs to be to hold races.

Ha ha, yeh people always think that because of the breakwater that the sound is alway glass water - No such luck I`m affraid.
Aa few years ago they raced under the Tamar bridge which should give much better water conditions.
My gripe is that noting is ever pushed/advertised here in terms of any sort of powerboat racing, even the F1 is only on the news the day before it happens.
dbe1 how long ago was it you raced, you may have raced agaisnt my dad?
