Team 747 rides again

Greetings Fellow Boatmadders
As the title says, Team 747 will ride again this year. We managed about 4 years in my faithful Spearfish and since then I've personally been on the edges of the sport riding in other people's boats(HTS, Biretta and Hibernia, thank you one and all).
Well the time came last year to bite the bullet and purchase a race boat again. I have bought John Ryan(Team Hibernia)'s spare boat the ex-Garmin Hunton 39. Crew will be John Guille(class 3A world champion), Robin Ward(Thunderstreak) and myself. A lot of time has been spent choosing drivetrain. With Robin's superb engineering knowledge and ability we were able to confidently opt for petrol V8s. The final spec is as follows: 850hp supercharged 570 ci V8s to go with Arneson asd8s and 1.5:1 BPM dropboxes. Shiftable BW 72s give us manoeuvrability. The whole package has started assembly and we hope to be ready end of June for some serious testing before CTC.
In case of any interest I'll post updates and photos as we go along.
Wish us all luck. This should be a nice little package for a class A 'starter' boat!
All the best
Jonathan Napier

Just in case anyone is still following progress......
Sadly too much ambition and not enough time means that we are not ready for CTC this year. Fingers crossed for next year!
All the best
Jonathan

That's sad news Jonathan, I was looking forward to seeing you again when you got to Torquay. Post some pics of progress please. Everyone is looking forward to seeing that boat racing again. Can you handle the speed though is the question!!

Team 747 is moving to Cummins diesel power

Team 747 is changing to diesel power.
As a result we have two V8 petrol engines for sale. They are 572 cubic inch(9.4litre)big block Chevy and supercharged. Just been rebuilt by Robin Ward of Thunderstreak fame. His business is race cars so he is a specialist in this area(see Ferrari servicing and Group C » Damax.co.uk). They are producing about 950hp and 1200 ft/lbs of torque. If preferred the supercharger can be removed and they will give 700-750hp and better fuel consumption. Due to the nature of Marathon racing these engines have been put together with great care and attention to reliability. Electronic over rev protection has been added.
The spec is as follows:
Electronic ignition control which monitors speed, boost and inlet temp
Two 4 cyclinder coils for controlled spark timing
Two 4 barrel holly carbs
BBS superchargers
Holley fuel pumps
Dual air cleaner/spark arrester
Large baffled sumps
Tall motorsport blocks
4.5inch stroke and bore
Balanced cranks, rods, pistons and flywheels.
Steel rods
Forged pistons with anti scuff coating
Roller rockers
New cams and followers
New piston rings
Heads rebuilt
Carbs rebuilt
Hi capacity oil pumps
New water pump impellors
Dyno run in and tested, dyno sheets available.

The engines are located on the Hamble.
For a quick response I can offer them at £25000 which is considerably less than they have cost me!!
Please contact Jonathan.napier@wanadoo.fr or +44 7921 299224 for further details if interested.

Why??

As an add-on to the above; some background....
I've always been a diesel fan and had a long association with Cummins from Miss Daisy times. I even have a Cummins gennie in my sailing boat! When we first got the Hunton the right deal wasn't available and the arrival of Robin in to the team made petrol an option. Sadly Robin has had to move on due to other commitments and this, with the arrival of the aforementioned Cummins deal, means a move across to the dark side is our best choice.
We may also save some money by needing slightly less effective earplugs!!

Slowly!
We now have a plan with Cummins diesel. Keeping the Arnesons and about 500hp a side so hoping for about 80mph. The drop box ratios will need altering. Hoping to be ready for Poole in May. Let's hope ambition and time are equal now. Oh, and budget can keep up!
All the best

My project took three years longer than expected so I wish you the best of luck. Be great to see some pictures. I looked at buying Garmin myself once.

Morning All
Well, I’m pretty sure all interest in this project has dissipated completely, but....
Further news; another delay means we won’t be launching until later in the year. The good news is that it will be less time pressure and hopefully plenty of development time for next year.
This project has tested all limits. I’m referring to financial, emotional and stress limits rather than waterborne but I am determined not to be beaten!!
Good news is the petrols are sold, they went to a classic Cigarette in Sweden, and the BPM Dropbox ratios didn’t need altering in the end.
The new diesels are nearly ready. They are a Cummins hybrid,(not in the sense of electric motive power)but QSBs fitted with a mechanical fuel pump system rather than the electronic system.
Keep you posted(if you can bear the suspense!)
All the best Jonathan

The end of the line.......

Well, sadly, the time has come to admit defeat. Team 747 may have run it’s last. Due to changed family circs(unwell parent), vast time overrun, medium sized budget overrun I am giving up on the project.
I have other plans which I’ll post here another time in case of interest but in the meantime the Hunton will be in the ‘for sale’ section.
All the best
Jonathan

Really sad to hear that Jonathan, PM me with how much you want for it now for a quick sale.

Hope that things work out OK and that we will see you back and raring to go in a year or two. Keep in touch.

I think she’s gone Mike! Sold within an hour. Need to confirm but will post details. Potentially a good result.
All the best
