Cowes 2009

A great days racing at Cowes yesterday.

Tony Toll's 41ft Apache and Dean Gibbs 39ft Fountain had a great race back up the Solent in the CPC race but even though Tony was trimmed out as far as he could go Dean had 10mph in hand and piped Tony on the line. Both racers very happy though and grinning from ear to ear. Tony has now promised to bring the Apache to Cowes next year for the CTC race. Dean intends selling the Fountain and is looking for something to take on Marcus in Cinzano.

The Honda boats found the big waves at the Needles “interesting” but loved it. They will be back next year in some form or another.

No doubt Marcus will come on here very shortly and give his account of his race and I can assure you it is a fantastic and exciting story. IMHO that boat, although 25 years old, is the ultimate CTC race boat. It’s the right length, it has the right power and its a great sea boat With its top speed of 90mph it has plenty of speed in the bag.

Chris Davies was texting me from the helicopter telling me the positions and when he told me that Mike Deacon in Hot Lemon was leading by 2 miles at Hurst with Cinzano & Hannes neck and neck behind I had a feeling that they would catch Mike and Marcus did and finished something like 11 seconds ahead. Hannes had a fuel problem 2 miles from the finish and simply stopped. A great shame because it could have been such a close race for all three.

I can't help feeling that it can't get much better than that. The race ran in the true tradition of the CTC being a little rough all the way. I feel very sorry for Blastoff who kinked a fuel line and slowed after leading the feet by miles for some time and of course for Scott Younger’s Sunseeker 38 "Driver Dry Berthing" which then took up the lead and was doing so well. This was Scott’s first CTC and he and his team looked very strong and were well prepared. We were very excited when the news came through that they were running in front with Hot Lemon not far behind but again no doubt we will hear their story shortly. I think they lost both engines in Lyme Bay coming home and had to be towed in somewhere by a fishing vessel.

Myles Jennings turned up at Cowes last night at around 11pm dressed in borrowed clothes and looked very funny. His boat had stopped and Myles was trying the clear the filters with the hatches open when a rogue wave hit the stern and swamped the boat. They tried to start the engines but no joy when a second large wave hit them on the stern and that was it. Bilge pumps overwhelmed she began to sink as can be seen.

As usual there are many more stories and I look forward to hearing them.

Roll on next year and the 50th anniversary of the race. It’s going to be a big week of three long distance races so should be fun. We have now applied for the World Championship for Marathon (offshore) boats and we will know in October if that has been granted.. If permission is indeed granted then it should be quite a show.
ML.

Old man Quoted: Dean intends selling the Fountain and is looking for something to take on Marcus in Cinzano.

Tell Dean to buy Dry Martini and turn it into a race boat again. It would be clash of the titans for next years CTC anniversary.

Being part of team 25 for the 3rd race this year, a quick word of what happened to us.
We lost both engines half way over Lyme Bay on the way back,
The fuel return pipe had worked itself off dumping the diesel in to the Engine bay then the auto bilge pump was pumping the fuel overboard unknown to us.
The disappointing thing was we were in a following sea which best suits us and we were starting to get a real move on,
Never mind we had a great time and would'nt have missed for the world suppose thats racing and we'll be back stronger than ever.
Scotts really starting to drive the boat to get the best out of it instead of going into the red mist mode the result is we are getting quicker everything feels a lot safer and its looking after the boat
Well done Scott, Simon if we didnt have the problem it could have been us

I would like to say congratulations to Marcus, Eric and Tim they did a fantastic job on the day and although in a different class to them we'll enjoy racing them in the future.

And Eric how mad is he? its that bit when shakes your hand and licks your ear Funny Guy

3B

Neither boat completed the course, although Ashleigh Foulser picked up Alex Foster Meridien Trophy for youngest competitor from Lady Aiken.

3C

2 finishers Ian Stirling beating Brian and Pat.

V24

The order was It wasn't Us, Vector Aerospace and Bat out of Hell.

V56 - SB Racing picked up The King George's Fund for Sailors Seahorse Challenge Trophy for Best Presented Entry.

Honda

Gives you an idea of the conditions;

Honda Press Release;

The Honda race which consisted of seven legs totalling 39.0nm with one lap of Poole and Christchurch Bay finished a little over an hour or so later between the transit of East Lepe and Gurnard Edge buoys in the Western Solent. The result was a 40 mile contest with the rest racing 70.
Conditions were described as extremely challenging and tiring by the Honda fleet on their return in to the official wet pit area in the North Basin of the Cowes Yacht Haven. Sea conditions were rough and waves were reaching some concerning feet as the crews maintained focus on the race before them.
A few Honda boats suffered some damage, which was expected of the sea states, but nothing that prevented any of them from completing the race. The full fleet from both classes 150hp and 225hp were in attendance with the exception of one 225hp Vortigern which had been having some technical difficulties yesterday that were not possible to overcome.
As the race came to a finish the crew of Heights of Abraham 225hp returned with their heads held high when they came first overall out of the Honda fleet. Driven by Rupert Pugh and navigated by Daniel Whapples the pair were described as totally elated with their victory at such a historic event and one so far from what they are used to in the normal multi-lap circuit of a Honda F4SA race event.
The words that were on everybody’s lips were confirmed when the crew of Hydrex the 2007 championship winners rolled into the finish line in their Honda 150hp that had miraculously over taken a few of the faster Honda 225hp boats.
Putting their achievements down to skill and an appreciation of the rough conditions Jak Cockman, driver and Andy Phipps, navigator had aimed to please the crowds and certainly managed to prove that the performance of a Honda engine is not to be reckoned with.
“I have to say that this has been the best race of the season so far; everyone enjoyed being part of something a little different and it really went a long way to separate the men from the boys and the women from the girls with our entire fleet battling it out together alongside new blood from different classes of racing.” Said Brian Wheeler F4SA’s Race Organiser.

Sports Boats

First overall Dean Gibbs in his Fountain, then Tony Toll in The Apache 41' with Barry Deakin and Nik Keyser in The Bandit making 3rd.

Finish order by Race Number >>
42, 41, V3, V56, 69, V24, V2, 2, 4 74 H1 H5 H2 H6 H9 H7 H4 C11 H8 C13 G97 H10 19 3 H20 V8 H18 H16

Just received some simply amazing pics from Keith Slater - as John has posted. I heard that it was a bit hairy down at the Needles but the way the guys were flying is outstanding in fact one of the Honda boats is so far out he must get the record for taking air! You decide. Some of the most beautiful shots I have ever seen with the Needles in the background.

Hey, I'm just trying to explain where the mistake may have been born.

You & Terry have very similar profiles. Except maybe in the tummy area.
