Training Day offered.....
This is not a lesson in how to drive your boat, it is a series of lessons in how to survive the land based activities you will experiance at a race day.
What I envisage putting on is a series of half day (for lack of a better word ) Training Days for brand new boat racers who want to race - either in a National Class, or in a BASIC race.
The events will be held in Southampton, and before selected events, at the event itself, but the day prior to the event.
What this will entail is the following:
1) How to enter the event.
2) How to read race instructions.
3) How to determine the race course.
4) What the Scruteneering is all about.
5) Actual scrutineering of your boat and kit.
6) The muster and start proceedure.
This training will be free to all new national and BASIC drivers/navigators and crew.
Although it may sound completely obvious to some, the requirements for the 'paperwork' side of the event are sometimes confusing, as are the rules about event licences etc. These will be explained, using the people on the course as the actual examples.
The importance of information on the race instructions, and how to build a 'map' of the race, and hints and tips on how to navigate the race course, and the work involved to get this information from the race instructions and chart will be done using an example race event.
The scrutineering will be done by a real RYA scrutineer, who will talk you through the steps he is checking and explain what and why he is doing what he is doing.
Finally the muster and start proceedure will be shown using actual boats if possible ( location specific )
We hope that these 'introductions' will help remove some of the ?fear?/uncertanty or doubt regarding your first event, and will make the whole process more enjoyable at the event, as a lot of the confusion and uncertanty that exists at your first event should have been resolved before you actually arrive at the event.
Any new race team who wants to be involved with this training should PM me. If you want to enter the Ramsgate event, then you will need to PM me urgently, as there is not much time to organise things for Ramsgate.
There will be a whole day training event in Soutampton in August 2007, date to be determined, for all interested new crew.

When I said who they were, suddenly they both withdrew....
So we have poked about a bit, and have come up with another three RYA officials who will help out, and will not get bullied away by the 'old guard'.
There are three definate dates for 2008:
First planned one is Friday the 6th June 2008 prior to the RMYC Cancer Research Basic race on the Saturday. Venue will be advised later.
The second day is on SATURDAY the 23rd August 2008, at Minehead, prior to the basic race on Sunday. The venue for this will be the RNLI station at Minehead.
The final training day is on Friday November the 14th, prior to the V24 Club RTI Basic race on the Saturday. Venue will be Drivers Dry Berthing.
It is probably too late to arrange anything for the event on February the 2nd - the RMYC Pool Brass Monkey, but the RMYC club is very helpful and if you need help with anything, either myself or someone from the RMYC will be able to sort out answers. So if you are thinking of entering the RMYC event on the 2nd and are worried about something, we will definately get something sorted for you.
