The anniversary was 50 years of Offshore Powerboat Racing run from Cowes.

Now if Martin wants to celebrate 2011, with a new occasion - best he hits the phones right now to find sponsors, officials etc.

If we could raise funds for these great people who are fighting for us and who come home maimed and limbless and have to suffer terrible injuries for the rest of their lives then why not support them whilst taking part in the 50th anniversary of this great race? Cowes came and went without us being able to finish the boat and so we decided to aim for the last race of the season at Portland. Now we can't take part in that one either as we said above for several reasons most of which are out of our control.

Many of you gave generously in support of our desire to take part at Cowes and we thank you for that but at the same time feel guilty that we have not been able to carry through our part of the bargain, we apologise for not doing so.

The up side is that regardless of our shortcomings you have raised over £1,000 for the Charity and they – Help for Heroes - have written to us and thanked us/you for the generous support.

Thank you from - the two OAP's & Andy Crabb.
Everything Mike has already said I completely agree with and I would like to add my thanks to everyone who contributed to this most worthy cause.

The Military dont stop to debate politics, they just go and get on with the job of defence whether here or abroad. This is our small way of saying thank you for giving what they do so willingly, everthing sadly in some cases.

Thanks again for all you have contributed to the cause .

Totally agree with every thing you have said

However.......How about you borrow a rib and compete in the Lymington challenge next weekend as punishment. I'm sure there would be some more donations if you get JF in the rib with you.

Just think of the money raised by selling the pictures

The first race was, in effect "year zero".
Therefore 50 years since the first race comes in 2011.

2011
- 1961
_______
50
_______

2010
- 1961
______
49
______

Simples.
Work this one out

1961 - 69 = 9 races
1971 - 79 = 9 races
1981 - 89 = 9 races
1991 - 99 = 9 races
2001 - 09 = 9 races

Total 45 races.

Now add 1970,1980.1990,2000,2010 = 5 races

Grand Total 1961 -2010 = 45 +5 races = 50 RACES.

You havn`t by any chance been working for H.M.Inspector of Taxes for the last few years.

Quite correct John, 2010 being the 50th running of a race from Cowes - 2011 being the 50th anniversary, ie. 50 YEARS since the first Cowes/Torquay Race, as the first race was year 0, the first year was from 1961 until 1962, the second race.
As hereunder:
2010 This years race
-1961 The first race
= 49 Years

2011 Next Years Race
- 1961 The first race
= 50 Years

Just simple arithmetic. 2010 less 1961 = 49.

I am happy to try to help find sponsors if you think it appropriate, but I understood our 2010 Title sponsors were "On Board" for another two years.
One would wish to keep such valuable friends I am sure.

Your maths are very good, it's your understanding of the English language that's at fault.

Anniversary, is "The annual return of the day on which any notable event took place" (Websters definition) So 1961 was the year the 1st race took place, meaning 1962 is the 1st Anniversary!!!!!!

Simple maths means that the 50th Anniversary is in 2011 Simples!!!

I agree with what you & other say Tony.
50 races agreed - the point I made was that 50 races = 49 years, as race 1 (1961) was the start of course, All I say is that in 2011 it is 50 years (not races) since the first in 1961.
I was born in 1947, therefore in 1957 I was 10, in 1967, 20 & so on.
Similarly, the race was 10 in 1971, 20 in 1981 & 50 in ---- ?
50 years would indeed mean 51 races, but why not celebrate 50 years as well ?
I do not wish to press point this anymore, as we have had a successful celebration of 50 races this year, & let us look forward to 2011 & hopefully enjoy another succesful event !

Erm, I was actually agreeing with you....

This year was indeed the 50th event, (I would say race, but I believe some years didn't happen!) but I would have expected the true celebration to be the 50th Anniversary.

Mind you, I'm not really bothered either way, as I've always thought Cowes was a crap venue, and used to hate racing there!

Sorry Tony,
Yes I realise that you agree - my wording, in re-inforcing my point, was not all it should have been, I see now! Sorry !

You are right that some years "didn't happen", but there was always a race organised.
It was that on some occasions, the weather caused cancellation, like in 1992 I think, the year after the Paignton Breach Ploughing Contest !

No I havn't Graham !
Must draw a question mark over your calculations though !
See Tony's post of Sunday.
