Fred McCaig is the new event director for RB12 sea race (as opposed to air or land), and I received an email from him at the end of last week, they have confirmed the venues for the overnight stops with one or two changes - Liverpool has been removed for example:

Weymouth - Falmouth - Swansea - Conwy - Troon - Kyle of Lochalsh - Thurso - Edinburgh - Hull - Ramsgate - Weymouth - 1723 nautical Miles.

Raymarine have also been announced as "Navigation Partners" and will be doing special deals and cash back on some of their products for competitors.

More good news for the RB12 team - they have got a title sponsor for the event - Saxo Capital Markets, the specialist in online trading and investment - I'm sure Ciao will be along with some information on them any minute!

Been reading the latest edition of "Marathon Classes Rules".

Anyone know why this special rule for "ultra long distance marathon races" ?

How many of the 39 listed on the RB 12 site have the qualifications required?

What is "local National eqvivalent qualifications" that shall be "approved by the licence holders National Authority"?

I think this must be clarified or otherwise there will not be many "Ultra Long Distance Marathon"-racers left...

There have been some incidents in the UK over the last few years that have made the RYA management and legal department very nervous and I believe this is their way of covering themselves. I would ask your National Authority for a marathon licence and see what they require - it does say previous experience is allowed.

It will certainly be interesting to see if it has any influence on the entry list although having a boat to race in is more of an issue for one or two on that list!

No problem for me. I have a Marathon-licence.
During RB08 there were a lot of people that bought a "oneday licence" for £60.
I have a couple of "would be" sponsors if they could come along for a leg or two.

I think you'll find that would be OK if they're not "in charge" of the boat and merely passengers - I'm sure the RB12 team would be able to help: http://www.rb12.com/contact.html

Event Licences

Mikko, If you have people who want to come on for just a day it is possible for them to be in the boat on an Event Licence with a self declaration medical. One Event Licence per day, but they are not allowed to be in control of the boat.
If they want to do more than two days they will need a medical.

I am no longer involved as RB12 have their own PR team - I don't know any more than any other competitor

Rb12

I am guessing here and reading the "leaked" email.

Perhaps in January 2012 RB12 had 38 paid deposits which they felt would translate into firm entries for the race.

Since then they have lost 19 potential entrants - That is not small change.

When the race was first announced on this forum, a good few honest racers said they would not be competing due to the entry fee cost.

You do have to wonder who paid their deposits back in 2009 and then realised in January of this year that they couldn't afford the Event?

No Idea.

That seems a lot of money to realise you are short, 3 months before the event is due to take place. The RB12 team were obviously fantastic at stepping up to sponsor previous years CTC events, but should they have kept some of the coffers back for the event they were actually intending to run themselves?

Neil / RB12 sponsored Cowes in 2010 & 2011 to try and build Marathon Powerboat Racing.

Their thought process was to encourage racers old and new with the end goal of all racing round Britain in June 2012.

Perhaps it was a somewhat idealistic goal considering the current economic climate, but hey, I haven't led and financed an expedition to trace the source of the River Nile.

I think some of the cancellations may be down to racers keeping their powder dry for June 2013, with big events in consecutive years it must be a factor although I would certainly hesitate to blame it all the Monte race.

It's not over by a long way and with course approval obtained including all of the environmental issues resolved it would be a shame for the event not to run now.
