I spoke to an engine supplier in the USA. They can squeeze stupid amounts out of a small block - There was a thread on this earlier... They were at one time topping 1200hp from a small block, but you had to run 118 octane.

Kinell me old vett was way undertuned at that rate, it was 240 orses at first with a few mods it came closer to 300 orses, used to go dam well with that hp......now 1200 looooooony orses would have had it in orbit

The 'stock standard' V24 engine supposedly pushes out 320hp, but in reality about 10hp less. Without blowing the engine or going past 5.7l you can squeeze 600 out reliably with cam, head and other modifications.
If you are looking at a sprint engine, or a blown engine 700 is easy to obtain.
