I set a new record!


The slowest fuggin run ever.....







My alternator blew whilst I was warming up, and I did not know. I saw the volts drop from 16 to 12, but did not think it was of importance..... I started the run at 75mph (gps) and finished the run at 30mph (gps). With the return to pits passing through the gates, the funny people decided to time me. The average for both ways was 36.77 mph, a new slowest run for an offshore boat...

Something is wrong with the electronics, and I have had to replace the spark plugs and such, as they were burned due to a very lean burn, supposedly due to the fuel pressure being to low. The volts at the end of the run ( tested by Springbok Mick )was 9v - not enough juice to run things properly....

I am back in london sourcing a new alternator. They dont have the parts up north!

I will return Thursday to re-attempt.

What a shame.

Don't feel bad though. After we set the record for Production Class in 92 in our V26 we went back in 94 with the same boat feeling confident that we could take the record back from Peter Armstrong who had taken it from us in 93 in his P28.

We were 3mph slower than in 92. It was some consolation though at the prizegiving do when they said that we were the best sounding boat of the week!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!

There is *NO* part in stock anyplace. They can get it to me by Friday "For the weekend".

I am canabalising a Jeep alternator. It has the same AMPS rating, the same mounting brackets, just a different 'plug'.

I have filed and drilled the resin away to expose the electronics, and fitted the plug from the broken unit to the new one. Then Swapped over the drive, so it will work wiht the 'serpentine belt' and not a fan belt. Then HOPEFULLY it will work when I get to Conniston. The electronics part I am confident about....

Tricky I know a place that has three in stock right now!!!!!!!!!

IMHO I thought you had to fit OEM parts to be compliant with class rules if so any run / record with the scrapheap challenge alternator would be null and void surely??????????

Somebody on this forum who knows the rule book should be able to clarify this.

I will request confirmation of this tomorow morning. I do have the original one which was fitted - the bearings are 'rumbling' on it and I got Salterns to replace it, and thay gave me the old part back! It still worked at the time of removal, but made a loud grinding noise! - Still if that is true, I will fit the grinding noise one - it only has to last 10 minutes!

Tricky, why dont you buy one of the many V24s that are for sale and rob the alternator off that and then you will be running genuine parts

Couldn't agree more, and had the competition read the *Rule Book* they'd probably have also had bow tanks, as from 1996> (T class, as apposed to P class) they weren't banned. But hey, we were happy to be unique!
