On the ship's radio licence you will find your vessel's international callsign and, if requested, 9 digit MMSI number. To obtain a ships radio licence in the UK visit the radio licencing centre web site www.radiolicencecentre.co.uk

you can also get licence just for a hand held unit you only pay about 12-15 quid and can use it on any boat as long as you got your operator's licence

the more the merrier!
as already mentioned if you transmit using a vhf marine radio you have to have a ships license( £20) and an operators license (either do the vhf course - the one we are talking about- or by direct assessment, but not many establishments like doing this)the operators license has to be paid direct to the rya.
the course includes lots of use of the radios and i give out a mayday distress message checklist so even a beginner can send out a help message if you are unable / incapacitated (ie kids / wife / mother in law!)
it is a requirement for all racers but also by law to enable you to use any marine vhf essential (with ships papers) if you are looking at cruising abroad but also in uk as many harbour masters are doing random checks, there has been a discussion and study as to making the ships license free if booked online as at present it is a yearly renewal (tax) and probably costs more to enforce than revenue (imho)

No more VHF licence renewals?

Ofcom plans to make ships` radio licences valid for the entire life of the vessel, and to make these licences available on a self-service basis and free of charge, when issued online via a new dedicated web-based service.

The proposals will ease administration and reduce costs for ships` radio users who are currently required to renew their licence annually at a cost of £20. Ofcom believes that this new approach will make it easier for users to comply with legal obligations and use radio equipment that is appropriately licensed.

Ofcom is proposing to:

* Remove the requirement for radio users to purchase a new licence each year. Instead, ship radio licences would remain valid for the life of the vessel.

* Provide a web-based licensing service as an alternative to the postal service;

* Issue electronic licences, free of charge, to users of the web-based licensing service; and,

* Continue to offer a postal service for applicants who do not have access to, or prefer not to use, the internet. This service would incur a fee to cover administrative costs.

Users will still be required to keep their licence details up to date. They will also require an amended licence if any important details change, such as the name or ownership of the vessel. Such amendments can be made online for free, or via a postal service which will incur a small charge to cover administrative costs.

The full consultation document can be found at www.ofcom.org.uk .

Actually it is only a legal requirement to have the ships licence if you have VHF installed. You can use the boat without having an opperators licence BUT you can not use the radio.

Whats the point? Well if you have to mak e a mayday message, and you dont have the licence, this will be overlooked, as it was a mayday message.

So not having a VHF because you dont have an operators licence is just stupid.
