any racing guys interested in doing a radio course ready for new season and for new guys putting faces to names i am going to run a special price course for you on a date to suit for £50 each and £5 donation to macmillan nurses can do upto12 per day based in portsmouth verytricky and scottyboy already enrolled, roll up, roll up..... can sort out a beer afterwards have a larf etc come on don't be shy (offer extended to anyone off boatmad forum) cheers: vhf course

Me and JF did a vhf course years ago, and we reckoned you could train a monkey to do it, looks like our theory is gonna be put to the test!

yes this course is the new dsc variation.....
it lasts approx 8 hrs and includes all items about short range vhf using mock up real hard wired radios and simulators (easy peasy ) there is a short 22 marks written paper and a simple practical assessment. for those who want re re-qualify you do not officailly need to until you get a dsc set but as those are the only ones you can now buy its probably worth it!
If you OWN A VHF RADIO YOU CANNOT LEGALLY USE IT without first passing this course!
we use real radios during the day learning about epirbs sarts navtex and others a good course and worth a days visit prior to the boating season I was thinking either beginning of Jan or whenever we can all agree a date
there is also a £20 rya license fee and you need to bring a passport photo> hope this is of help and good to blow away christmas blues, based in old portsmouth and you can arrive by water if you want!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how about sat 21 jan i know its a long way off but christmas is only 3 weeks away.... and that leaves everyone free to arrange work etc and get rid of hangovers so you will all be wide awake and eager (?)can also do 7th jan if people would prefer

You guys have to take an 8 hour class just to have the ability to use a VHF?

Over here, you buy a VHF and use it. I would think that having an 8 hour requirement would result in many people not bothering to buy a radio, and then putting themselves and response teams at risk while boating.

Granted, there are a bunch of morons over here that use it as if it is their personal radio frequency, giving no care about anybody else, but getting a license does not stop that.

Is there some other form of non-licensed com in England?

Many people use VHF without a licence. I'm one of them! I am not sure but I think you are required to get the licence if you intend to go racing. I think.

Legal Requirements - before transmitting
It is a legal requirement to have a ship's radio licence and marine radio operator's certificate before you use transmitting equipment from your yacht. On the ship's radio licence you will find your vessel's international callsign and, if requested, 9 digit MMSI number.
