my opinion

In my opinion I think the RYA is killing the powerboat sports with too high entry fees and loads of separate races for different classes, why not have one venue with 5-6 classes so we can all share the cost of crane, place to hire, and paper-work etc...

Safety Boat Issue; - If it was not for people providing their boats and time this event could not happen, because of health and safety issues. I have done safety boat this year for OCR, Class 3 and Honda, Yes they do give me allowance- only for fuel, I do have to get to these events, and I don’t claim money for hotels
Insurance- I carry a £2,000,000 third party liability insurance which cost me £89 per year, maybe this is the way every racer should go, therefore the RYA could lower the entry fees and I feel more racers would take the sport up as it is a dying death.

I was also going to safety boat the round Britain race but pulled out due to no allowance what so ever for safety boat crews. A friend of mine safety boated this event in Plymouth and I was disgusted that when he was out all day in the rain and wind and finally followed them into the Marina, he was charged £3 for mooring along side them. Now this guy was out of pocket for the day from fuel, boat, time, launching fee and mooring. Surely this is enough to put future safety crew of.

there is just a lack off interest at the moment, i remember almost 40 boats in ocr, and i think there was about 15 or maybe more offshore not that long ago, but time does fly by.(10 years ago)

Really do hear what your saying!!! The rya are so expensive compared other countrys ie france, italy. i think italy they even pay class 3 boats to start the race and the year license fee is cheap ie under £100 and yet italian governing body have got the same outgoings as the rya ie insurance, calender cost and officials and more!! least this is what i have been told through the grape vine. Dont know about ocr but class 3 licence is £450 + measurement certificate think it was ether £50 or £75 + £250 entry fee for each race.

i my opinion if you have to worry about the entry fees, you shouldnt even think about racing. the reason class 3 2 ltr and OCR and aliker are no longer popular is that you have to know what you are doing to enter and be competitive. This is why Honda is popular, you can be competitive straight out the box, with nothing but a sharp prop and practice.

Could have been an interesting post but ended with a coma and not a full stop so is there more to come?

Or is your very existence in jeopardy?

there are engines about, this is the third new optimax i have had with another on order. If you have the money you can get one,the problem is that people want engines for nothing and that is why they cannot get one. This is not a cheap sport and never has .

You can enter OCR and C3 nationals as a basic entry with little or no experience with racing !! and with very minimal entry fees, NO measurement fees, NO License fees. just turn up and race. WWRC (westcountry watersports racing club will even subsidise the entry for Salcombe (National or Basic) !!
So now you can just turn up and race at no more cost than tearing around the bay on Sunday afternoon !!

And how many will we get ??

So its not the cost !!

Its not the difficulty !!

So what is it ??

Bob

race boats

the other problem this sport has is that too many people buy race boats and dont actually race them.
