Rumour has it that they've gone to a 1.75:1 so as to handle the extra power.

Thats a 12" mid in the pic and it says it will be produced with 15"s only. Thats not a sportsmaster either its the sst version. I bet the only difference is that this time you will actually get a 4 hole Compressor not a 3 hole!

That advert was from an "offshore" magazine, who I assume only felt the need to report the fact that the motor was going to be made available in an offshore type guise.
It's also going to be available in a drag or circuit type version, as shown in the photograph.

I'm trying, but not got a very good response from Barrus yet, but we're trying. We're told that it's a better motor though.

Apparently the whole torque delivery is different (hence the gear ratios I spose) and its a much better motor.

The problem, as told to me, is that there is a limited production run for these motors, and all orders have to be in by a certain date.
The other problem is that like the 2.5EFi's that are being produced, these motors will only be sold to approved race teams.

OK, Here's what we know so far, the new motor revs to 7000pm, (old motors only 6600) which is I presume where the extra hp comes from.
We (Marinautic) are hoping to be able to supply these at around £13,650 + vat (TBC)
Below is the email from Barrus, explaining the position.....
I am told that these engines are only made when there is a sufficient batch order to warrant it. They only make these once a year and the next scheduled available production slot is Feb 2010. This would depend upon a confirmed European order for a minimum of 20 units by 13th Nov 09. A Feb production should mean that we could receive around late April/early part of May 2010.
Orders have to be confirmed with non-refundable 30% deposit paid at time of order.
The following is an extract from the USA governing the supply of these engines:
The new race model features a Gen 2 – 2.5 Liter OptiMax powerhead which combines components from the Mercury Racing OptiMax 2.5XS outboard and the current Mercury Racing engineered OptiMax 175 Pro XS outboard.
The OptiMax 200XS ROS (Race Offshore) is the official power of U.I.M. Class 3C offshore racing, a highly competitive single engine mono hull offshore racing class which competes throughout Europe.
The engines will be produced only in the short shaft “SS” 15-inch drive shaft configuration with the 1.75:1 Sport Master gearcase. Both right-hand and left-hand rotation models will be available. Models are intended for single or twin engine installations. Right-hand rotation models feature a Sport Master gearcase with a cambered skeg – a natural for single-engine applications such as outboard drag racing.
Production for OptiMax 200XS ROS models will be based on confirmed orders and the engines will be built one time per year in advance of the following season. Models will be sold direct to known, qualified race teams or through Mercury Racing dealers or OEM boat builders. It is the responsibility of the dealer or OEM boat builder to ensure the eligibility of race teams ordering engines through their business and communicate such information back to Mercury Racing.
There is no warranty.
Pricing (to be confirmed) -is for a bare unit only with no rigging kit or prop etc.
It has to be emphasised that the factory will only supply these engines for this specific racing class and the usage will have to be satisfactorily established before orders can be accepted.
Best Regards
