Hi Guys,
For reasons which will be explained later we have had to re-badge the event but the day remains as originally planned and as previous Poker "events"! It's going to be a great day!!

It's all here on our new web site. Still have stuff to add later so keep an eye on it.. www.thepowerboatrallyassociation.co.uk

Now the RYA and all three Harbour Masters have got involved life has got a tad more difficult so initially although I thought this would be a walk in the park, instead it's turning into being almost as testing as putting on a Marathon race - and it's supposed to be fun!

The good news is that all the boxes are gradually being ticked with the help of people like Gill & Gareth @ Drivers and Gordon Compton, thanks guy's! This had better be worth all the effort!!

Who knew that you had to work with Harbour Masters?

15 plus fast boats running through one of the busiest shipping lanes in the World.

This has all come about because of the poorly run (not my words but others) "River Crouch" Poker event last August. This has had a disastrous effect because ALL Harbour Masters were circulated by the River Crouch HM saying that it was a bloody disaster and to be aware of such awful behaviour and debauchery from similar organisations - obviously he is biased against powerboats and has been looking at some of the American web sites!

Also, it appears that some Harbour Masters actually look at Boatmad - The World is Watching - and found out about us hence the phone call to me requesting further information. As far as I am concerned the only way to do that is face to face!! The same applies to the RYA who also got involved with the RC episode. The fact that our type of event has been taking place within the Solent quietly and successfully for the last 17 years has been a bit of a surprise to a few people but not to others!

At the end of the day our event is a bit of fun and does no harm to anyone. Fun is what's needed and missing in this politically correct world so that's what we intend to do. Follow in the footsteps set by Mark Pascoe, some dodgy character called Tony something or other in Poole and our leader Jon Fuller.

Whatever happened on the "River Crouch" last year-
You of all people, should have spoken to Harbour Masters various before you announced your Poker Run Event.
When you bang on about this "politically correct world" - Do you think Curtis, Tobert and Bulman didn't inform the PLA and others before they set off for the first Putney - Calais?

John, I Personally take all the above onboard. But I thought I'd make a few general comments on this subject.

You of all people should not need to be reminded Putney-Calais was a race, a Poker Run isnt. There in lies the clear and absolute distinction. Everybody (most notable the Crouch HM) seems to be using a race as the yardstick/judgement criteria for these social events, the very social events that appear to have gained popularity largely as a no-vote to racing and all its associated bollox. In theory; I could have a ring around in the morning and tomorrow afternoon 15 boats (not that I actually have that many friends) could all have a run (at speed, in formation or whatever) from Hayling island to Yarmouth for some lunch, and back. Would I need to inform the HM's and if so, what I am I specifically informing them of?

I'm sure I dont know all the facts, but I know enough about the Essex event last August (and the supposed backlash) to pass comment. IMHO, its the biggest pile of bigoted trash Ive heard in a long long time and appears to born out of clear lack of understanding, an irrational fear of these types of events and almost certainly more than just a hint of personal opinion/agenda from persons in a position of (limited) authority whom just happen not to like powercraft. I'm quite sure that should Mike be wanting to organise a 500 boat sailing regatta in the Solent, he'd be getting all the help in the world. I dont seem to recall seeing any videos of a powercraft turning in front of a tanker mid solent in the past 5 years!

The Essex event was a cracking weekend, with an exceptional turnout and fun was had by all. I only hope that certain parties have a massive reality check and that these types of events continue for many years to come. It is my honest opinion that blocking them would become the thin end of the wedge with regards to pleasure powerboating in the UK.

If a collective group of cruisers or sailors get together do they have to contact the harbour masters.

What powers do the HM have to prevent this event from happening.
Its not a race.
