Guys yes i am a RIBnobber with a bit of cash in the bank and no RIB. The side effect of this is that i think everything that i like the look of is clearly my next boat. I'm not messing anyone around, i'm gonna buy something quick for a laff for a bit.
So Gav, yes i think your boats look luvley and i am still keen to see how she goes.
I'm also quite taken by a bit of F200 if this boat'll get me into it for less than £5k. Can someone with far more understanding of the whole thing explain what the engine regs are to qualify and if this outfitt needs a new powerhead to qualify or simply to be competitive (i'm not sure i'll ever be that competitive)
Stu: Remember waiting for your email before i go and see this Frode!

I drove the boat for a season when it was new and imported by its first owner. It was originally powered by a worked XR2 and we used it for ski racing in F3 and Ladies classes. The boat was very lively and ran very level in any rough without a trace of "stuffing". The main problem we had was trying to put skis on skiers at the back of the boat without anyone falling in!

In 1991 I had a 23ft Frode which I raced in 2 Litre, it wa so successful that the following winter Paul Hicks and I built five, all of which raced the following season. They are incredible into a head sea and as you say run really level. We also built him a class 2 cat, see pic;
In about 1995 or so I raced a 19ft in 1.3 litre, it was really too short as we couldn't keep up with Ian Cutler in his batboat, we but if my memory is correct did finish 2nd in the Nationals, 3rd in the Europeans and fourth in the Worlds in Cape Town. All courtesy of Mr Burnett ...
Frodes are really terrific boats, in Sweden they are still popular, in 1990 I went to stay with Mikael as I was racing with him in class 2 in his 32ft boat with tripple tuned 2.5s. He had a 23 with a big block mercruiser in and a #6 drive, that was awesome !
Mikael and I did the Guernsey 4L worlds too in a 25 that was very quick.

In the picture above you can see th rail that Frode used to put along the chine to aid in a stuff, on the 21 I have gone for the anti stuff fins, as originally used by Buzzi. we had them on the 189 that I raced for Vulture Ventures in 1.3L in about 1992 and they do work really well, they can be seen in the picture below: If anyone knows where this boat went I would be very interested !

If I'm not totally wrong she did race with an Frode 23.
There are on beeing rigged right now in Sweden with an Honda 150 four stroke.
We have an new national class here in Sweden called V-150. For old boats with an 150 hp engine think there will be as many as 20 boats in races this summer.

Simon, there's a good bit of AOA on those winglets - did you ever calculate how much lift they generate?

You will need the lift Coefficent of that aerofoil, should be on the NASA web site or one very close to it. Real bitch is a constant angle of attack which you never get coz the bugger keeps moving.
lift coefficient for NACA 1408 airfoil at 4 degrees AOA which is a genral typical foil 0.55
Then its
L=Cl x 1/2 x p x V2 x A
A is the area
p is rho air density
Cl coefficient of lift
V is the velocity
If we can start it off with lets say 60 mph = 88 ft/sec
Area say 1 sq ft
Lift = 0.55 x .5 x .0023769 x 88 x 88 x 1
works out at 5.06 lbs per foil but if you up the speed to 100 mph it moves up to 14.12 lbs per foil. Best thing would be to change the shape of the foil to give a better lift coefficient.
Could expand this to calc the lift generated by a cat tunnel but that is a whole topic of its own. power /weight ratio changes, AOA, hydrodynamic lift, induced & Parasitic drag, C of P & C of L. Fluent software is good for flows ect ect if a bit OTT Air & Water observe the same laws, just one is ficker than the other.
Check out the NASA Site Aerodynamics for Beginners http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/airplane/short.html

Winglets are now about to be fitted, new seat frames made from 316 stainless, (suprise, suprise). Managed to blag an EFI tester and sorted the starting problem, she's now a s sweet as a nut on a hose, going to drop the lower unit and put in a new impellor for safetys sake, Alien cowl going on as well, almost tempted to keep her ?
Serious thought going into the positioning of the winglets, have offered them up several times with sticky tape, stood back, moved them etc, etc, etc. Going to commit to a position this weekend without too much angle of attack on the basis that when they really work the bow tends to be pointing down in a near stuff anyway. Will post pics soon.
