I reckon your 'one punch for faster, 2 punches for slower' system would work well

Try the "Back-Chat" intercoms, no battery's, no wire's,
no electric's
. Nothing for the salty stuff to feck-up!

Receptions crap when the string gets wet though and the tin cans go rusty in no time.
